Men's Volleyball Picks up Third Straight Win

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Jon Roat (Macedon, N.Y.) had 14 kills, served five aces, and hit .429 to help pace the seventh-ranked Wentworth Institute of Technology men's volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Emmanuel in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference played at Tansey Gymnasium.

Winners of three straight the Leopards improve to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in league play while the Saints fall to 5-9 (1-1).

Emmanuel scored the first point of the opening set, however Wentworth put up the next seven and would extend its lead to 10-3 after a kill from senior Jake Reed (Arvada, Colo.). The teams split the next three points and sophomore Erik English (Simi Valley, Calif.) made it 13-7 off a kill. The Leopards used a 10-1 run to make it 23-8 and took the opening set, 25-10. Wentworth hit .625 (10-0-16) in the frame with Reed leading the way, recording five kills on six swings without an error. Roat had three kills on four swings without an error and served three aces. Emmanuel hit -.091 in the set, however English had four kills.

A pair of ties in the early part of the second set eventually gave way to a Wentworth lead of 11-6 after a Roat kill. Scoring three of the next four points, the lead was extended to 14-7 when Roat and senior Mike Hansen (Rochester, N.Y.) combined on a block. A sophomore Alex Silva (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) kill ended the spurt, however the Leopards would take an 18-9 lead after a ball handling error. The Saints scored five of the next six points, which included an ace from sophomore Kevin Orsley (San Jose, Calif.) and made the score 19-13. A service error and an attack error upped the score to 21-13 but Emmanuel responded with three straight points to make it 21-16 after an attack error. The Leopards would take the second set, 25-19. Roat had five kills without an error (5-0-9) in the set while Reed and classmate Alex Potts (Niverville, N.Y.) had three kills each. Freshman John Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y.) had four kills on five swings for the Saints.

Wentworth jumped out to leads of 3-0 and 4-1 before Emmanuel closed the gap to 7-5 on a kill from Orsley. The Saints again brought the set to within two points (9-7) after a service error, however the Leopards scored five of the next seven points, capped off by a Potts kill, forcing the visitors into a time out at 14-9. The Black & Gold extended their lead to 20-14 off a Roat kill, forcing the Saints to take their second time out. Out of the break Emmanuel scored two quick points to make it 21-16, however Wentworth took the set, 25-18 completing the sweep. Roat had six kills in the frame while Potts had four on five swings without an error. English led Emmanuel with four kills in the set.

Reed had eight kills while Potts added seven. Freshman Augusto Rodriguez-Guerrios (Guaynabo, P.R.) had 28 assists and 12 digs while Hansen had four blocks.

English led Emmanuel with nine kills. Freshman Seamus McDonagh (Long Beach, N.Y.) had 20 assists and nine digs.

Wentworth is idle until the Leopards host No. 10 Rivier at 7:00. Emmanuel is back in action on Tuesday, when the Saints host No. 14 MIT.
