Softball Splits Their Saturday with Curry

MILTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (15-5, 3-1 CCC) split a doubleheader against the Curry Colonels (11-12, 2-4 CCC) Saturday afternoon, as the Leopards' offense exploded for a 13-1 win in game one before the visitors suffered a 4-2 loss to their Commonwealth Coast Conference foe in the later game.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 13, CURRY 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth shot up nearly half of its runs in the first inning with a pair of home run blasts. Graduate student Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) blasted a three-run home run after the Leopards' first two batters made it on base. Shortly thereafter, sophomore Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) also sent a three-run home run with two runners on base beyond the fence, giving the visitors a commanding 6-0 lead in the first inning of play.
  • The Leopards added to their advantage in the third inning as a single from graduate student Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) with the bases loaded brought home senior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.). Her score extended the lead to 7-0.
  • A high-scoring seventh inning came about with Wentworth holding bases loaded for the majority of the inning. A group of singles by Pina, Rowe, freshman Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.), senior Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.), and sophomore Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.), all with runners on base, drove in five more runs for the Leopards, while an error drove in an additional sixth scorer. The scores gave the Leopards a 13-0 lead.
  • Curry took advantage of a passed ball by the Leopards in the seventh inning, as the Colonels scored with the bases loaded on the play to cut the final deficit to 13-1.
  • Offensively, the Leopards were led by Pina's and Rowe's respective home runs while a total of six student-athletes recorded two hits. In the circle, Hancock only surrendered four hits and struck out six batters in a complete game.

GAME TWO: CURRY 4, WENTWORTH 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In the second inning, Bollentin blasted a solo home run beyond the fences, giving the Leopards a 1-0 advantage. Returning to the top of the order later in the inning, a single by Beverly with the bases loaded brought in a score by Rowe to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Curry cut the deficit to one in the third inning as a single brought in a score by freshman Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.).
  • The Colonels made their comeback in the sixth inning, starting with a double by sophomore Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) who brought home a runner to tie the score at two-apiece. Following that score, a groundout and a fielder's choice on two separate at-bats led to the Colonels scoring two runs, earning themselves a 4-2 decision.
  • The Leopards' offense was guided by Beverly and senior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) who each notched two hits while Beverly and Bollentin also recorded an RBI.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Wentworth has won four of the last six matchups with the Colonels.
