BOSTON, Mass. – In defensive fashion, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (17-5, 5-1 CCC) continued their dominant run in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tuesday afternoon as the Leopards shut down the Hawks of Roger Williams (8-16, 1-5 CCC) by respective 3-1 and 4-0 scores.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 3, ROGER WILLIAMS 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • In a busy first inning, the Hawks scored the first run of the game as a single by sophomore Jamie Wells (Castle Rock, Colo.) brought home senior Isabelle Rosado (Central Islip, N.Y.), giving the visitors a 1-0 edge.
  • In the latter portion of the inning, Wentworth tied the score on a single by freshman Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) that brought home a score by graduate student Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.). At the next at-bat, both Igawa and senior Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) advanced bases on a passed ball, bringing home Bollentin to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.
  • After a defensively-sound handful of innings, the Leopards extended their lead to two in the sixth inning as a single by sophomore Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) ran home a run by graduate student Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.), extending the host's lead to 3-1.
  • Igawa (2-3, RBI) guided five other student-athletes who recorded a hit for the offense. In the circle, senior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) struck out four across a complete game while surrendering just three hits.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 4, ROGER WILLIAMS 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth got on the board early in game two as a passed ball in the first inning advanced Pina to second base and Beverly home to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Two batters later, Pina scored her own on a passed ball, extending the lead to 2-0.
  • In the third inning, the Leopards capitalized on another passed ball as freshman Kait Shawney (Northwood, N.H.) advanced home on a passed ball to give the Leopards a 3-0 advantage.
  • With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, a Rowe walk brought home Beverly, giving Wentworth a 4-0 lead.
  • Beverly, Shawney, and sophomore Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) led the Leopards' offense with a hit each, while Rowe secured the game's only RBI. Freshman Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) dominated the circle, only surrendering three hits across seven innings while striking out two batters.
