WESTON, Mass. – In a pair of tight battles, the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (23-5) fended off the Regis Pride (10-18) in non-conference action Wednesday evening. With tonight's pair of wins, the Leopards secured the most wins in a season in program history, besting the previous high of 22 wins set a season ago.

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 4, REGIS 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • After senior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.) got on base in her first at-bat in the first frame, graduate student Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.) drove Pettenger home with a single up the middle, giving Wentworth a 1-0 edge.
  • In the second inning, the Pride got on the board as a double by freshman Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) drove in a base runner, tying the contest at one apiece.
  • The Leopards gained some separation in the third inning as a single to center field by freshman Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.) brought home a score by graduate student Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.), marking a 2-1 lead for the visitors. A double by sophomore Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) later drove home Igawa for another score before a sacrifice fly out by senior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) later brought home Rowe, extending Wentworth's lead to 4-1.
  • In the fourth inning, senior Diana Petrarca (Coventry, R.I.) blasted a home run to cut the Pride's deficit in half at 4-2.
  • Regis cut the deficit to just one in a 4-3 score with their push back in the seventh inning as sophomore Lexi Nichols (Granby, Conn.) doubled, bringing home a score by junior Jaylene Deslauriers (Taunton, Mass.).
  • Three Leopards (Igawa, Pina, sophomore Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.)) notched two hits in the contest while Igawa, Rowe, Beverly, and Hancock secured one RBI each. In the circle, Hancock struck out seven batters en route to her 11th win of the season.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 7, REGIS 3

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Another home run for Petrarca in the first inning of game two put the Pride ahead of the Leopards by a 1-0 score.
  • Wentworth tied things up in the second inning as a single by sophomore Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) drove home Rowe, knotting the score at 1-1.
  • With Pina and Beverly on base in the fifth inning, a single by senior Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) sent the latter home and broke the even tie, giving the Black & Gold a 2-1 edge. A single by Rowe later sent home Pina for a score before an error with the bases loaded brought home Bollentin a batter later. Wentworth's scoring splurge continued when freshman Kait Shawney (Northwood, N.H.) made it to base on an error, bringing home Igawa for another score to stretch the Leopards' lead to 6-1.
  • In the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly out by Petrarca brought home Nichols, cutting the deficit to 6-2. Later in the inning, sophomore Bianca Burke (Cambridge, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch, cutting the Pride's deficit to 6-3.
  • In the sixth inning, a single by Kranz with the bases loaded brought home another score by Beverly, pushing Wentworth's lead to 7-3.
  • Offensively, Kranz led the way for the Leopards, going 2-4 with 3 RBI. Pina totaled three hits while in the circle, freshman Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) struck out six batters in a complete game.
