WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team (19-5, 7-1 CCC) kept the bats alive Saturday against the Gordon Fighting Scots (13-17, 3-7 CCC) as the team notched 7-2 and 3-2 victories over their Commonwealth Coast Conference foe backed behind two multi-run home runs from senior Julia Bollentin (South Kingstown, R.I.) and graduate student Briana Beverly (Pawcatuck, Conn.).

GAME ONE: WENTWORTH 7, GORDON 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth capitalized early in the first inning as the first three batters made it on base. Graduate student Alexandra Pina (Cumberland, R.I.) reached first on an error, bringing home a score by senior Kaitlin Pettenger (Budd Lake, N.J.). A sacrifice fly by Bollentin a few batters later brought in another score by Beverly, extending the Leopards' lead to 2-0. Later, a single by sophomore Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) brought home Pina, expanding the lead to 3-0 by the end of the first half of the first inning.
  • The hosts got on the board in the later portion of the inning as a single ran home a score by sophomore Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.), dwindling their deficit to 3-1.
  • In the third inning, sophomore Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) blasted a double to right centerfield and advanced to third on an error, bringing home Bollentin for another score to extend the advantage to 4-1.
  • With Pina and Beverly on base in the fifth inning, Bollentin shot a ball past the fence in left centerfield, adding three more runs to Wentworth's total and stretching their lead to 7-1.
  • Rivera drove in a run for the Fighting Scots in the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to claw back, as the Leopards snagged a 7-2 victory by game's end.
  • Offensively, four Leopards registered two hits for the team, while Bollentin led the way with her home run and four RBI in the game. In the circle, senior Erin Hancock (Holden, Mass.) struck out eight across a complete game.

GAME TWO: WENTWORTH 3, GORDON 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Gordon earned the first lead of the day as a single by freshman Abby Murray (Myerstown, Pa.) drove in a run for the hosts in the second inning.
  • In the third inning, Wentworth responded as a Beverly home run with sophomore Katelin Howe (Bow, N.H.) already on base gave the Leopards a 2-1 edge.
  • The Fighting Scots tied the game at two apiece in the fourth inning with a solo home run from Rivera.
  • With Rowe on base, Howe reached first base on a throwing error and Rowe capitalized on the error, coming home to put the Black & Gold ahead by a 3-2 score.
  • Beverly (2-4, 2 RBI) led the Leopards offensively with her home run while Bollentin also notched two hits. In the circle, freshman Julie Schriver (Moscow, Pa.) struck out five while only surrendering five hits in a complete game.
