Herrick Named TCCC Defensive Player of the Year

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - A total of 11 different institutions from The Commonwealth Coast Conference were represented on the 2010-11 All-TCCC Men's Basketball Team and the list of major individual award winners, it was announced today by Commissioner Gregg M. Kaye. In addition to the all-conference team, Wentworth Institute of Technology senior Sam Herrick was chosen as the TCCC Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-TCCC selection, while junior guard Adam Dombrowski (Dunstable, Mass.) and sophomore forward Corey Therriault (Auburn, Maine) were named Third Team All-TCCC.  Additionally, Gordon College and Wentworth Institute of Technology captured the Team Sportsmanship Award. Voting for the All-TCCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among TCCC men's basketball coaches.

Herrick, a First Team All-TCCC selection a season ago repeated that feat in addition to being named the league's top defensive player.  In 13 conference games, he 14.5 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 1.2 blocks per game, while overall he has started all 25 games for the 16-9 Leopards and is averaging 13.0 points, 10.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.1 blocked shots per game while shooting 48 percent from the floor.  This season he established a new seasonal mark of 269 rebounds.  In two seasons wearing the Black & Gold, he has started 49 of 52 games and is averaging 11.9 points and 9.8 rebounds per game in addition to 1.1 assists and 1.0 block per game.  He has recorded 23 double-doubles in those 52 games.

Dombrowski has started nine of the 22 games he has seen action in overall, averaging 10.9 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per contest.  He has made 43 three-point baskets, which is second on the team and is shooting .767 from the charity stripe.  Starting eight of the 12 conference games he has played in, he is averaging 11.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.  Dombrowski has started 34 of the 48 games he has appeared in over two seasons, averaging 10.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.

Therriault opened his sophomore campaign with a career-high 32 points in an overtime loss at Wheelock and set the tone for a solid season from there.  Starting all 13 TCCC contests, he averaged 12.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.0 steals per tilt while hitting 32 three pointers and shooting .795 from the charity stripe.  Overall he has started all 25 contests for the Leopards and is averaging 12.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while his 52 three pointers lead the team.  In two seasons he has started 44 of 50 games and is averaging 9.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.0 steals per contest.

Posting the most regular-season wins since the 1998-99 campaign (16), the 16-9 Leopards finished TCCC play with a 10-3 mark, which placed them second for the second consecutive season.  Wentworth begins its quest for a second conference title in five seasons on Tuesday night when the Leopards host seventh-seeded Colby-Sawyer in a TCCC Quarterfinal.
