Strong Second Period Pushes Stonehill Past Hockey

FOXBORO, Mass. – Four different players scored goals, including seniors Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Conn.) and Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y.) who each also had an assist as the Stonehill College ice hockey team doubled up Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-2, in a non-conference contest played at the Foxboro Sports Center.

With the win the Skyhawks improve to 4-3-3 on the season while the Leopards fall to 3-7-1.

Stonehill peppered Ryan Hubbard (West Roxbury, Mass.) with 13 shots in the first period, however the sophomore, who was making his first collegiate start, stopped all attempts. Late in the period the Skyhawks were on the power play but Wentworth would get a shorthanded goal from junior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.), which was assisted by sophomore Jake McDonough (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.) with 1:50 left in the frame.

The Skyhawks answered with three goals in a span of 8:15 in the second period to take a 3-2 advantage. Dorgan and senior Dan Graham (Billerica, Mass.) set up senior Richard Harris (Grand Island, N.Y.) at the 5:53 mark before Dorgan scored from senior Garrett White (Wakefield, Mass.) at 9:34 to give Stonehill a lead it would not relinquish.

D'Elia scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal at 14:08 before Wentworth junior Kyle Lebrun (Bridgewater, Mass.) cut the deficit to 3-2 with a goal shortly after a power play had expired at 15:38 of the period. Lebrun's goal was set up by freshman Paul Filippone (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Cam McLennan (Calgary, Alta.).

At 12:01 of the third period D'Elia and senior Willy Baker (Suffren, N.Y.) set up sophomore Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Mass.) for an insurance marker.

Hubbard was pulled for an extra attacker for 1:32 of the final 2:14, however Wentworth was unable to capitalize.

Freshman William Palmer (Cranston, R.I.) made 17 saves for the Skyhawks while Hubbard made 36 stops for the Leopards. Stonehill had a 40-19 shot advantage in the contest.

Wentworth hosts 13th-ranked Nichols on Saturday afternoon.
