BOSTON, Mass. – Junior Kyle Lebrun (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored a pair of goals and senior Joel Miller (Calgary, Alta.) made 38 saves – including two in the final 40 seconds of play – to help the Wentworth Institute of technology hockey team hold on for a 4-3 win over Endicott in anECAC Northeast contest at Walter brown Arena.
Winners of three straight the Leopards improve to 6-13-2 overall and 5-6-1 in league play while the Gulls dropped their second straight to fall to 11-8-2 (7-4-1).
Lebrun got Wentworth on the board at 4:05 of the opening frame when he tipped home a freshman Eric Eustace (Oakville, Ont.) shot. Eustace was set up by senior Stephen McManus (Westwood, Mass.). At the 16:07 mark Endicott tied the game when freshman Carter Horwitz (Tustin, Calif.) fired a shot past Miller, which was set up by classmate Ryan Dougherty (Sterling Heights, Mich.).
With 23 seconds left in the period freshman Sam Levin (Simsbury, Conn.) gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead when he fired a shot from the left circle. Freshman Jonny Spada (Glen Rock, N.J.) and junior Jake Flynn (Lino Lakes, Minn.) picked up helpers on Levin's first collegiate goal.
Lebrun notched his second of the game off a pass from freshman Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.) just 1:58 into the second period and freshman Angus Johnston (Calgary, Alta.) gave the hosts a 4-1 lead when he scored a shorthanded goal off a turnover at 10:45.
At 2:31 of the third period, freshman Josh Bowes (Sturgeon County, Alta.) tipped home a freshman Trey Olson (Omaha, Neb.) shot to make it a 4-2 game. Freshman Nichols Petrella (Hilton, N.Y.) set up the play with a pass to Olson.
The Gulls pulled freshman Kevin Aldridge (Beverly Hills, Mich.) for an extra attacker with 2:06 left and with 1:24 left the move paid off as Olson scored from freshman Cam Bleck (Lake Forest, Ill.). After the ensuing faceoff, Aldridge was again pulled and Endicott kept the puck in Wentworth's end. With 14 seconds left Endicott went on the power play and was able to get a shot off, which was saved by Miller. However, the Black & Gold won the faceoff just before time expired.
Miller made 16 saves in the first period and 14 in the third as the Leopards were outshot 41-22. Aldridge turned aside 18 shots.
Wentworth is at Suffolk on Saturday. That same day Endicott hosts Johnson & Wales.
