Men's Soccer Wins Second Straight

MILTON, Mass. – Junior Sam Martins' (Dartmouth, Mass.) penalty kick in the 73rd minute of play snapped a 1-all tie and helped lift the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Curry College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest.

With the win the Leopards improve to 2-2-3 (1-1 CCC) while the Colonels suffer their first setback of the season, dropping to 5-1-0 (1-1).

Despite a scoreless first half, Wentworth held an 11-7 edge in shots, however just four of those 11 were on net. The Leopards were also awarded four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes of play.

In the early stages of the second half, the hosts had a 3-1 advantage on shots before senior Adam Rhodes (Litchfield, Conn.) scored his team-leading fifth marker of the season on Wentworth's second shot of the half, coming at 55:26.

Just over four minutes later Curry evened the game at 1-all as junior Ryan Madden (Milton, Mass.) set up senior Nick Gilman (Longmeadow, Mass.) for his second of the season.

With 17:08 remaining, a foul occurred in the box, giving the Black & Gold the chance to take the lead with a penalty kick. Martins stepped up and buried the attempt. Wentworth would add an insurance goal with 7:28 remaining as sophomore Alec Watkinson (Merrimack, N.H.) tallied his first of the year.

Junior Kevin Pepin (Fairhaven, Mass.) made five saves for the Leopards while sophomore Dan Johnson (Easton, Conn.) made nine for the Colonels. Wentworth held a 24-16 shot advantage and took seven of the game's eight corners.

The Leopards look to extend their win streak to three when they travel to UMass Boston on Wednesday afternoon. Curry returns to action on Monday when it hosts Johnson & Wales.
