Women's Lacrosse Opens Season at Smith

Northampton, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team (0-1) opened their season on the road against the Smith Pioneers (2-0) in a non-conference battle Monday afternoon. The Pioneers took the game, 18-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Sophomore Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, Calif.) put the Pioneers on the scoreboard at the 13:02 mark of the first quarter. Following Tschider's tally, the host poured in five goals, three off of the stick of senior Reese Gittelman (Ocean City, Md.), to hold a 6-0 advantage after the first quarter.
  • After Tschider scored the initial marker of the second quarter, the Pioneers scored two goals in a span of 2:27 before Tschider scored her hat-trick goal at the 8:39 mark, marking a 10-0 score. Smith scored two goals following, one from Gittelman, to hold a 12-0 lead at the halfway mark.
  • Junior Jennie Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) opened the scoring in the third quarter with her third goal of the game. The Pioneers scored thrice more to hold a 16-0 lead after three quarters.
  • After Smith opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, freshman Maggie McCann (North Grafton, Mass.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career. McCann scored again at the 3:19 mark, leading to a 17-2 score. A goal for the Pioneers gave the hosts an eventual 18-2 victory.
  • Sophomore Lily Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) made 15 saves in between the pipes.
  • Wenworth had the advantage in draw controls on the day, 13-9, as sophomore Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie (Laconia, N.H.) led with four draw controls for the team, along with two caused turnovers. McCann led with two goals and added three draw controls. Behind Cohen's four, junior Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) scooped up three ground balls.


NOTEWORTHY:

  • Today's game marked the first at the helm for Leopards' head coach Lindsey Terjanian.

  • Wentworth has their home opener slated for Thursday evening (5:00 p.m.) against Emerson.
