Fast Start Lifts UMass Dartmouth Past Women's Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass – Freshman Maddie Wright (Mattapoisett, Mass.) scored 16 points on 11 goals and five assists as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's lacrosse team (2-2) defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology (0-3), 21-2, in non-conference action on Sweeney Field Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UMass Dartmouth scored three times in a span of 2:16 to take a 3-0 lead, with Wright scoring two of those goals. Wentworth cut the gap to 3-1 as senior Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) set up sophomore Jenny Montville (Plainville, Mass.) with 7:50 left. Wright answered with a goal 40 seconds later, starting a 4-0, quarter-ending run that gave the Corsairs a 7-1 lead after the first quarter.
  • The Corsairs scored five times in the second period, with Wright factoring in on four of the five goals (two goals, two assists), and added six tallies in the third quarter.
  • Hamblett ended UMass Dartmouth's run, scoring 1:47 into the fourth quarter before the visitors scored the last three markers of the contest.
  • Hamblett and senior Celi Lopez (Lowell, Mass.) each scooped up three ground balls while Hamblett caused a game-high three turnovers. Freshman Maggie McCann (North Grafton, Mass.) won a game-high six draw controls.
  • Freshman Taytum Shanahan (Bozeman, Mont.) made her first collegiate start in goal. Sophomore Lily Cohen (Cherry Hill, N.J.) came in in relief and made three saves.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Wentworth won the ground ball battle, 17-15.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Today marked the third-ever meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads, 2-1.
