INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Wentworth Batting Leaders:  Dillon Koster (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI), Nolan Freeman (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Justin Kirst (2-for-3)
Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Clayton Harper ((L, 0-1), 1.1 IP), Jon Campbell (2.2 IP, 0 R, 0 H)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Western New England scored three times in the first inning, using a sacrifice fly, a passed ball, and an RBI single to account for their runs. An inning later the Golden Bears added four runs, using a pair of bases-loaded walks an RBI single, and a sacrifice fly to take a 7-0 lead.
  • Wentworth got on the board in the third inning by loading the bases with no outs. Junior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) walked and went to second when senior Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) drew a walk. Freshman Christian Peruzzi (Plymouth, Mass.) drew the Leopards' third straight free pass of the inning. Koster grounded into a double play which scored Freeman and moved French to third. However, a groundout ended the threat.
  • The Leopards plated another run in the fourth inning, coming on a two-out single from Freeman, which scored Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.), who drew a one-out walk and went to second on a junior Justin Kirst (Boston, N.Y.) two-out single.
  • Koster pulled the Black & Gold within two when he hit his first home run of the season in the fifth inning. French led off with a single and was safe at second on an error, which allowed Peruzzi to reach on a fielder's choice and both came around to score on the home run. Freeman brought Wentworth to within one in the sixth when he singled home senior Kyle Litwin (Jacksonville, Fla.) who had led off with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice from Kirst.
  • The Golden Bears scored twice in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run from sophomore Vincent Caccavale (East Hartford, Conn.).
  • Koster, Freeman, and Kirst each had two hits for Wentworth. Freshman Clayton Harper (Somerset, Mass.) took the loss (0-1) while sophomore Jon Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. Senior Zach Gagnon (Pomfret Center, Conn.) and freshman Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) combined for two innings of two-hit relief work.
