Baseball Clipped by Gordon in Doubleheader

WENHAM, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a pair of games to Gordon College Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Scots (6-11) rallied to walk-off the Leopards (5-8), 4-3, in the opener, and took the nightcap, 3-1.


GAME ONE:  Gordon 4, Wentworth 3

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Wentworth Batting Leaders:  Kyle Litwin (2-for-3); Dillon Koster (2-for-4); Nolan Freeman (1-for-3, HR)
Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Hunter Thornton (5 IP, 2 R, 5 H); Jacob Knowles ((L, 1-1) 1.2 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2K)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • A one-out single in the bottom of the third inning gave Gordon runners at first and third and the Fighting Scots took a 1-0 lead on a sophomore Andrew Hartman (Bethel, Conn.) sacrifice fly.
  • Wentworth tied the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double from freshman Ayrton DiPina (Pawtucket, R.I.). Senior Kyle Litwin led off with a double and went to third on a fly out from sophomore pinch hitter Aaron Lundgren (Portsmouth, N.H.). DiPina's double tied the game and he stole third, however, a double play ended the inning. The bottom of the inning saw the hosts take a 2-1 lead after a junior Patrick Tevenan (South Weymouth, Mass.) RBI single.
  • Junior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) led off the sixth inning with a home run, tying the game at 2-all. Graduate student Dillon Koster (Woburn, Mass.) followed with a single, went to second when junior Kyle Desjardins (North Granby, Conn.) grounded out, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) reached on an error which allowed Koster to score, making it 3-2.
  • Graduate student Connor Hartman (Bethel, Conn.) led off the seventh being hit by a pitch and he moved to second when sophomore Shane Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) walked. An RBI single from Tevenan scored Hartman and Demers moved to third on a double play. An Andrew Hartman single won the game for Gordon.
  • Koster and Litwin had two hits each for Wentworth. Junior Jacob Knowles (Concord, N.H.) took the loss (1-1), pitching 1.2 innings. Junior Hunter Thornton (Lyme, Conn.) pitched five innings, allowing two runs on five hits.


GAME TWO:  Gordon 3, Wentworth 1

Wentworth Pitching Leaders:  Brodi Farinas ((L, 1-1) 5 IP, 3 R (1 earned), 4 H, 5 K); Jonathan Campbell (1 IP, 1 H)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Demers gave Gordon a 1-0 lead with a two-out home run in the bottom of the first inning.
  • The fast-moving contest remained a one-run contest in favor of the Fighting Scots until the fifth inning when Gordon put up a pair of runs. Junior Jalen Coyne-Martinez (Pittsfield, Mass.) was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an errant throw on a force out attempt which put freshman Dalton Cody (Barre, Vt.) on third. Cody scored on a Connor Hartman sacrifice fly.
  • Wentworth cut into the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Junior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) hit a one-out single, and with two outs, scored on a senior Kyle Litwin (Jacksonville, Fla.) double, With the tying run at the plate, a groundout ended the game.
  • Freshman Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) took the loss (1-1), allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out five in five innings. Sophomore Jonathan Campbell (Snohomish, Wash.) pitched the sixth inning, allowing one hit. At the plate, Litwin, O'Neill, French, and DiPina each collected hits.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 60th and 61st all-time meetings between the two programs. Wentworth leads 35-26.

  • The two teams play a single game in Weymouth on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
