Late Inning Heroics Lead Baseball to Split with Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. – Junior Kyle Desjardins (North Granby, Conn.) hit his second walk-off hit of the season as he hit a single in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 1-all tie and lift the Wentworth Institute of technology baseball team to a 2-1 win over Gordon. The Fighting Scots had taken the first game 8-1.


GAME ONE:  Gordon 8, Wentworth 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth manufactured a run in the bottom of the second inning as junior Kyle O'Neill (Haverhill, Mass.) led off with a single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from classmate Nolan McManus (Milton, Mass.) On an errant pickoff attempt, O'Neill moved to third and junior Matt Masciadrelli (Westfield, Mass.) squeezed him home.
  • Gordon took advantage of a pair of Wentworth errors in the third inning which helped put up six runs. Three of those six runs came on a junior Ben Popovitch (Tolland, Conn.) home run. The Fighting Scots added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to round out the scoring.
  • Junior Matt Perconti (Hancock, Maine) took the loss (0-1), allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out three. Sophomore Christian Alcantara (Weymouth, Mass.) pitched 1.1 perfect innings while freshman Clayton Harper (Somerset, Mass.) allowed one run in the seventh. Offensively, O'Neill was 3-for-3 and graduate tudent Dillon Koster (Woburn, Mass.) was 1-for-3.


GAME TWO:  Wentworth 2, Gordon 1

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Senior Aidan French (Chicago, Ill.) led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, making him the 23rd player in program history to reach 100 career hits.
  • Gordon had the best chance to score first, as the Fighting Scots had the bases loaded with two outs in the third inning. An intentional walk to load the bases paid off as sophomore Brandon Sullivan (Quincy, Mass.) had a ground ball hit to him where he threw home to end the inning.
  • The Leopards broke through in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Koster drew a one-out walk and stole second. An infield single moved him to third and he scored on a delayed steal attempt where O'Neill swiped second.
  • Gordon evened the score at 1-all in the top of the sixth as sophomore Shane Demers (Sandy Hook, Conn.) led off with a home run. In the bottom of the inning, Wentworth had runners at first and third with two outs, however, was unable to get the go-ahead run across.
  • The Fighting Scots had the go-ahead run in scoring position with two outs in the top of the eighth but freshman Brodi Farinas (Lewiston, Maine) got a strikeout to end the threat.
  • French led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk and went to second on a junior Nolan Freeman (Braintree, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. Koster grounded out which moved French to third and he scored the winning run when Desjardins put a single through the left side.
  • Sullivan tossed a no decision, allowing one run on four hits and striking out a career-high 11 batters. Farinas picked up his first collegiate win, pitching a scoreless eighth. Four different players recorded hits for the Black & Gold.

ALL-TIME SERIES:

  • Today marked the 57th and 58th all-time meetings between the two programs. Wentworth leads 35-24.
