BOSTON, Mass. – Sophomore Ryan Coakley (Flemington, N.J.) scored five goals and assisted on three others to lead eight multiple-point scorers as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2007 season with a 21-7 win over crosstown foe Emerson.

After Emerson had taken a 1-0 lead with 8:46 left in the first quarter, the Leopards responded with a pair of markers coming from sophomore Michael Cushera (Waltham, Mass.) and junior Chris Kipp (Scraborough, Maine) to take a 2-1 lead with 8:46 left. However, the Lions scored the final two goals of the period, including one with a second left, and led 3-2 after the opening period.

The second quarter was all Wentworth as the Black & Gold outscored the hosts, 7-0, and led 9-3 at the break. Coakley had two goals and two assists in the quarter while Cushera (two assists), Kipp (a goal and an assist) and a goal and an assist from freshman Alec Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) helped pace the Leopards.

Wentworth extended its lead to 13-3 by scoring the first three goals of the third quarter and held a 16-5 lead after 45:00 of action.

The Leopards outscored Emerson 5-2 in the final quarter to account for the final scoring. Coakley had a pair of fourth-quarter goals.

Kipp scored four times and assisted on another for a five-point day, while Cushera had two goals and four assists, junior Steve Glover (Marstons Mills, Mass.) had three goals and three assists, and Paradis and classmate Nick Parent (Windham, N.H.) had two goals and one assist apiece.

Freshman Tim Parlato (Needham, Mass.), who won 10 of 19 faceoffs, had a game-high 12 ground balls and junior Jared Proulx (Nashua, N.H.) made seven saves. Wentworth held a 55-21 shot advantage and a 34-28 ground ball advantage.

The Leopards host MIT in their home opener Tuesday night.
