Strong First Half Lifts Men's Soccer to Win Over Norwich

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) each scored first-half goals and junior Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) made three saves as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team evened its record at 1-1 with a 2-0 win over Norwich on the second day of the Cadet Kickoff Classic.

Basaca scored on the first shot of the game for either team as the Cadets committed a foul and he found the back of the net from 30 yards out at 10:58. The Leopards continued to apply pressure which resulted in a pair of shots, however one was high and the other was blocked before it through the defense.

Price entered the game in the 28th minute and wasted little time giving Wentworth an insurance marker. Senior Michael Zendan (Charlotte, N.C.) took a shot which was initially saved by Norwich's Brendan Germano (Monroe Township, N.J.), however the rebound came to Price in front of the net and he put the Black & Gold ahead by a pair at 27:26.

Nine of Wentworth's 17 shots came in the second half, however the Leopards were unable to increase their lead. The Cadets had six second-half shots with just a pair coming on net, both of which Schallmo turned aside.

Schallmo picked up his seventh career clean sheet with his three-save effort. Germano made five stops for Norwich (1-1). Wentworth had a 17-9 shot advantage while corner kicks were even at four apiece.

Wentworth hits the road to play Mass. Maritime on Wednesday night.
