Martins Records Hat Trick in Men's Soccer's Win at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) recorded a hat trick, including netting the eventual game-winning tally, as the Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team defeated Western New England, 4-2, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference contest played Tuesday afternoon.

Winners of three straight the Leopards improve to 7-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in CCC play while the Golden Bears fall to 8-4-1, 3-1-1.

Martins gave Wentworth a 1-0 lead just 7:04 into the contest when he took a pass from freshman John Dauphin (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and fired a shot inside the top right corner. Just over three minutes later, however, senior Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) evened the score as he took a cross from sophomore Corey Brown (Somers, Conn.) and fired a shot home from the front of the net.

At the 28:09 mark Martins gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead as he headed a shot to the top left corner. The goal came off a corner kick play where senior Matt Cicalis (Bridgewater, Mass.) took the corner, fed classmate Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.), who found Martins for the header.

The next three goals would come 2:35 apart. Brown tied the game at 64:51 when he took a pass from junior Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.J.) and found the right corner of the net. Just 36 seconds later, Martins completed the hat trick and scored what would be the game-winning goal as he found the back of the net with a shot from in front.

Basaca set up the Leopards' insurance goal as he served a corner kick towards the box where sophomore Griffin Price (Allendale, N.J.) headed the service in at 67:26.

Sophomore Philip Chomicki (Dorchester, Mass.) picked up the win, making three saves. Junior Tyler Lavigne (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) made three saves for the Golden Bears. Wentworth had a 14-1 shot advantage, while Western New England had the edge, 3-2, on corner kicks.
