Softball Takes Two From Maine-Presque Isle

BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Haylee Bacik (Lowell, Mass.), junior Liz Glavin (Ipswich, Mass.), and sophomore Karsyn Sawyer (Chatham, N.Y.) combined to go 13-for-21 with 11 runs scored, and 12 RBI to help pace the Wentworth Institute of Technology softball team to a sweep over the University of Maine-Presque Isle. The Leopards rallied to win the first game by an 8-7 score before taking the nightcap, 17-6.

Wentworth got a pair of runs in the bottom of the first as Sawyer drew a leadoff walk and scored on an RBI double off the bat of junior Sam Curran (Quincy, Mass.). After Glavin reached on an error and moved Curran to third, Bacik delivered a single up the middle to score Curran. The Owls tied the game at 2-all in the top of the second, taking advantage of a pair of Leopard errors. Freshman Jordan Jandreau (Edgewood, Md.) had an RBI on a fielder's choice.

The Leopards took a 3-2 lead in the third when Glavin led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball, and would eventually score on a groundout by junior Anne Harris (Germantown, Md.).

UMPI took a 5-3 lead in the fifth as sophomore Kathryn Patenaude (Presque Isle, Maine) had an RBI double, junior Whitney Donovan (Ashland, Maine) had an RBI groundout, and Patenaude would come around to score on an error. In the bottom of the inning Wentworth made it a 5-4 game, thanks to a leadoff double by Curran, who went to third on a long flyout by Glavin, and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Bacik.

The Owls scored twice in the sixth to make it a 7-4 game as senior Brittany Luetjen (Hampden, Maine) delivered a sacrifice fly and Patenaude had an RBI single, which scored sophomore Taylor Cochran (Topsfield, Maine).

Wentworth cut the lead to 7-5 in the home half of the sixth as senior Paige Mochi (Cambridge, Mass.) delivered a pinch-hit sacrifice fly, which scored Harris. Harris had led off by reaching on an infield single, went to second on an error, and moved to third on a passed ball.

Sawyer led off the seventh with a single and went to second on a wild pitch before moving to third on a wild pitch. Glavin would ground to second, scoring Sawyer to cut the lead to 7-6. Bacik singled and went to second on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single from junior Isabella Grassetti (Monson, Mass.) to tie the game. Grassetti, who took second on the play, would get caught in a rundown trying to steal third and would score the winning run when a throw went out of play.

Curran picked up her first win (1-2) as she allowed seven runs (two earned) on nine hits and struck out three. She was also 2-for-4 at the plate. Bacik was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Senior Krista Coffin (Presque Isle, Maine) took the loss (0-2) as she allowed eight runs (five earned) on eight hits, and struck out four. Patenaude was 2-for-4 with two RBI while sophomore Amanda Allen (Limestone, Maine) and junior Allyson Pullen (Waterville, Maine) had two hits apiece.

Game two saw Wentworth take a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run single from Glavin, which scored Sawyer and Curran. The Owls tied the game in the top of the second as Pullen delivered an RBI single and Donovan drew a bases-loaded walk.

However, in the home half of the second, the Black & Gold took the lead for good, scoring five times, keyed by a RBI single from Curran and a three-run home run from Bacik. After UMPI made it a 7-3 game on a Coffin single in the top of the fourth, Wentworth exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the inning. Sawyer had an RBI ground out and an RBI triple, Glavin drove in a run each with a single and a double, and Mchi and Harris had RBI singles each. Freshman Marina MacDonald-Soccorso (Avon, Conn.) also had an RBI in the inning.

The Owls would round out the scoring with three in the top of the fifth as Donovan had a two-run single and sophomore Shannon Brown (Calais, Maine) had an RBI single.

Bacik improved to 2-6 on the year as she allowed six runs (three earned) on seven hits and struck out four, while also going 2-for-4 with three RBI at the plate. Glavin was 4-for-4 with four RBI, Sawyer was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, and two RBI, and Curran and Harris had two hits each.

Brown and Pullen had two hits apiece for the Owls, while Donovan drove in three runs. Freshman Kaitlyn Dow (Milbridge, Maine) took the loss (0-2).

Wentworth is at Endicott for a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference games on Saturday. UMPI plays three games at Fisher College on Friday.
