Salve Regina Cruises Past Women's Basketball

NEWPORT, R.I. - Salve Regina University women's basketball welcomed its former standout, Erin Phillips, the 2010-11 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Player of the Year, back to the Rodgers Recreation Center as an assistant coach with the visiting Leopards of Wentworth Institute of Technology. Pleasantries occurred before and after the game, but during the contest the Seahawks dealt a 69-30 defeat to winless Wentworth.

Seahawk center Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) led all players with 18 points in 20 minutes of action. With three blocked shots, the senior swatter was a big reason the visitors shot under 21 percent for the game.

Sophomore Marissa Pendergast (Medfield, Mass.) recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. She also had four assists and two steals.

Since 1982, Salve Regina (8-6; 5-2 CCC) has held an opponent to 30 points or fewer 16 different times, winning all 16 of those contests, while Wentworth has been the victim in seven of those games.

The Seahawks had scoring from 11 of its 12 players n the lineup while junior point guard Kaitlin Birrell (Scituate, R.I.) contributed four assists, a block, and a steal. Junior guard Sarah Averill (Newfields, N.H.) swished two 3-pointers and finished with eight points off the bench.

Ashley Conway (Danvers, Mass.) led the Leopards with seven points. Ashley Stowe (Voluntown, Conn.) grabbed 10 rebounds as Wentworth fell to 0-14 overall and 0-7 in the conference.

Salve Regina heads to Dudley, Mass., on Thursday for a conference doubleheader with Nichols College while Wentworth hosts Gordon College.
