BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Ashley Conway (Danvers, Mass.) scored 20 points to go along with eight assists and seven steals as the Wentworth women's basketball team picked up its first win of the season with a61-49 triumph over Gordon in Commonwealth Coast Conference action,
Gordon scored the first four points of the game, with freshman forward Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) and freshman guard Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) staking the Fighting Scots to a 4-0 lead. The Leopards battled back to tie the game on four straight points from sophomore forward Kendra Kerr (Marshfield, Mass.) before Kratche knotted the game at 6-all. Junior guard Jordan Biggar (Beverly, Mass.) and Kratche traded baskets to tie the game at 6-all with 14:28 left and Kratche gave the visitors an 8-6 lead.
Conwat gave Wentworth its first lead of the contest when she drained her first three of the night, However, the lead was short-lived as sophomore forward Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.) hit a 3-pointer to put Gordon ahead, 11-9.
Two free throws by Kerr began a 10-0 run for the Black & Gold, who took a 19-11 lead on a sophomore forward Christine Henry (Tewksbury, Mass.) 3-pointer with 7:07 left. Tallamy scored the next five points to cut the lead to three but Conway and Biggar pushed the lead to seven. Wentworth held a 26-20 lead at the break.
The Leopards led by as many as 10 (41-31) with 11:30 left in the half before a 9-2 run by the Fighting Scots trimmed the lead back to three. During the run Kratche had four points and Bareford had a 3-pointer. A Conway layup and Biggar jumper put Wentworth back up by seven.
Gordon pulled within five with 3:15 remaining when Tallamy hit one of two free throws, but five straight Leopard points sealed the win.
Kerr added 14 points, nine rebounds, and two assists, while Biggar had 10 points, nine rebounds, and a pair of steals. Sophomore forward Ashley Stowe (Voluntown, Conn.) chipped in with nine rebounds, four assists, and a pair of blocks.
Kratche had 16 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks for Gordon, while Tallamy added 14 points and a game-high 13 caroms. Bareford finished with 13 points and three assists.
With the win Wentworth stands at 1-14 overall and 1-7 in CCC play. The Leopards are at Curry on Saturday. Gordon dropped its third straight to stand at 6-9 (1-7) and hosts Nichols on Saturday.
