Women's Basketball Picks Up Road Win

Women's Basketball Picks Up Road Win

WENHAM, Mass. — The Wentworth women's basketball team snapped an eight-game losing streak as the Leopards picked up their first road win of the season in their final road contest with a 52-47 triumph at Gordon.

A back-and-forth opening to the game saw the Fighting Scots jump out to a 14-7 lead with 10:00 left, thanks to a pair of jumpers from freshman Brooke Kratche (Chargrin Falls, Ohio) and a 3-pointer from sophomore Skylar Bareford (Stonington, Conn.). However, the Leopards would battle right back, though, as junior Jordan Biggar (Beverly, Mass.) picked up all 11 of her first half points in the remaining minutes to give her team the slight 23-20 lead at the break.

After a few close minutes to open the second half, sophomore Kendra Kerr (Marshfield, Mass.) lit up the offensive end for Wentworth with 10 points to help forge a 15-point lead over the Scots with 6:46 to go. Seemingly facing defeat, Gordon battled back using a 16-2 run to close the gap to just one point with 34 ticks remaining thanks in large part to eight points from freshman Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) and six from classmate Aly Towle (Rochester, N.H.). In the end, however, time ran out on the Scots' comeback effort, as Wentworth sealed the game from the line to pick up the win.

Tallamy finished the night leading all scorers with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while Kratche chipped in nine points and five boards, while Towle and Bareford contributed six points apiece.

Pacing the win for Wentworth was Kerr with a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double on 9-for-13 shooting and Biggar who finished with 13 points. Junior Ashley Conway (Danvers, Mass.) added seven points, five rebounds, and six assists.

Both teams conclude the 2011-12 season on Saturday. Wentworth hosts Curry, while Gordon is at Nichols.
