SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team saw its three-game win streak snapped, as the Leopards suffered a 21-8 defeat to Western New England University Wednesday afternoon at the Golden Bear Stadium. The Leopards drop to 4-5 this season and 1-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action, while the Golden Bears jump to 2-8 overall and 2-1 against league opponents.
Western New England and Wentworth traded goals to start the conference tilt, as junior Jenna Tetreau (Dudley, Mass.) matched the Golden Bears' opening goal at 26:34. The Golden Bears rattled off three straight points for the 4-1 lead, before junior Brooke Paradis (Pelham, N.H.) brought Wentworth within one with consecutive goals from senior Courtney McCormick (Hanson, Mass.) and freshman Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.). Western New England scored the next six of nine goals to lead Wentworth 10-6 at the half, despite seven saves from Leopard freshman goalie Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass).
Western New England held Wentworth to just two goals in the second half, adding 11 goals of their own, including two apiece from sophomore Olivia Truenow (Franklin, Mass.) and junior Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.). Wentworth sophomore Julie Dam (Milford, Mass.) got one back for Wentworth 3:02 into the second half, but the Golden Bears defense held the Leopards scoreless until 17:31, when junior Leah Cummins (Plymouth, Mass.) broke the drought with a free position goal.
Paradis led the Leopard offense with three goals – her fourth hat trick in as many games – while Cummins, Dam, Rogers, Tetreau, and senior Haley Sabino (Topsfield, Mass.) each scored one goal apiece.
Kuhns made ten saves in second-half action for Wentworth, collecting 19 overall in the effort. Senior Shannon McFadden (West Islip, N.Y.) earned the win in the cage for the Golden Bears, playing to a two-save first-half performance, while freshman Kaitlyn Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) registered six saves in second-half relief.
Wentworth returns to action on Sunday for a 3:30 p.m. make-up game at UMaine-Farmington.
