Women's Soccer Comeback Falls Short

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman Mollie Coyne (Hamilton, N.J.) netted a goal and an assist as the Emerson College women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the season as the Lions held off a late Wentworth rally in a 4-3 win.

Wentworth got on the board first when senior Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) fed a cross to sophomore Olivia Moore (Salem, Conn.) at the 30:25 mark. The lead held up until the hosts knotted the score at 1-all with 2:35 left in the frame as freshman Samantha O'Donovan put home a loose ball in front after a corner kick.

Emerson wasted little time taking the lead, as the hosts scored less than a minute into the second half on a marker from freshman Christine White (Snohomish, Wash.), which was assisted by freshman Tayllar Righini (Salem, N.H.).

The Lions upped their lead to 3-1 when Coyne netted an unassisted goal at 53:21 and led 4-1 when Coyne fed freshman midfielder Alyssa Giannone (Mountainside, N.J.) at 59:43.

A pair of freshman Valeria Zapata (Pawtucket, R.I.) goals spaced 2:10 apart – both off corner kicks by junior Ashley Cook (San Diego, Calif.) pulled the Leopards within one. The first came at 74:40, while the second came at 76:50. Wentworth had three shots late in the contest but could not put the equalizer home.

Sophomore Allie Altman (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) made four saves for Emerson, which held a 20-10 shot advantage. Senior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) made seven saves for the Black & Gold.

Emerson opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Sunday afternoon at Suffolk. Wentworth, which falls to 0-1-1, hosts New England College on Saturday.
