Gordon Defeats Women's Soccer, 3-1

WENHAM, Mass. – The Gordon College women's soccer team tallied a pair of first-half goals as the Fighting Scots improved to 10-2 overall with a 3-1 win over Wentworth in Commonwealth Coast Conference action in front of a Homecoming crowd. In addition to recording their 10th win of the season, the Fighting Scots improve to 4-1 in league play while the Leopards drop to 3-8-1 overall and 2-3 in the CCC with the loss.

Senior Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.), sophomore Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.), and sophomore Hannah Midwinter(Barkhamsted, Conn.) tallied a goal apiece to lift the Scots to the win, while junior keeper Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) earned the win with three saves.

Nedde put the Scots on the board in just the eighth minute after breaking through the Wentworth defense and slotting a ball to the far post past senior keeper Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) for the early 1-0 lead. Then in the 26th minute, McSherry recorded her tally after finishing a feed from Nedde for the two-goal advantage heading into the break.

Determined to keep the game within reach, Wentworth senior Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) caught the Scots off guard with a shot to the near post one minute into the second to make it a 2-1 game.

Midwinter put the game out of reach, though, just over three minutes later when she sliced through the midfield and ripped a shot from just outside the 18 to the upper corner of the net to secure the two-goal victory.

Sharing the net on the day for Gordon were rookie keepers McKenzie Dion (North Grafton, Mass.) and Katie Mader (Scarborough, Maine), while starting defenders Julia Miller, Krysti Leach (Winslow, Maine), Rachel Ashley (Lowville, N.Y.), and Shelby Palafox (Lexington, Mass.) helped keep the Leopards' attack at bay for the win.

Gardner made six saves in the first half, while freshman Miranda Stuckey (Lafayette, Ind.) made seven stops in the second half.

The Scots return to play on Tuesday, Oct. 9 as they host non-conference Plymouth State at 3:30p.m., while Wentworth is back at it on the same day at home against non-conference Framingham State.
