BOSTON, Mass. – Senior Elizabeth Somma (Windham, Maine) netted the game's only goal in the 30th minute of play as the Wentworth women's soccer team held on for a 1-0 win over Western New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Sweeney Field.
The Golden Bears applied pressure early, including putting a shot on off a corner kick play in the second minute of action. However, freshman Miranda Stuckey (Lafayette, Ind.), making her first collegiate start, saved the header attempt.
Somma netted her first tally of the season at 29:07 when she took a feed from freshman Jackie McCullough (Schenectady, N.Y.) just inside the box and drilled a shot to the center of the net, just inside the crossbar.
The Leopards had a chance to take a 2-0 lead just 31 seconds later when a foul occurred in the box. However, freshman Briana Kubik (Blanford, Mass.) stopped sophomore Tori Armishaw's (Scarborough, Maine) penalty kick.
Wentworth had chances to go ahead throughout the second half but could not increase its lead, thanks to five saves from Kubik.
Western New England put pressure on the hosts late in the contest as freshman Rachel Suntag (Boonton, N.J.) put a shot on net that was saved by senior Jess Gardner. The rebound went out of bounds and the Golden Bears were awarded a corner kick with 16 seconds left. A shot was put on net, but was saved and deflected out of bounds by Gardner just before time expired.
Stuckey made four saves in the first half to pick up the win. Gardner, who played the first 34 minutes as a field player, made five saves in the second half.
With the Wentworth snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 3-7-1 (2-2 CCC). The Leopards are at Gordon on Saturday. Western New England dropped its second straight to fall to 5-7-1 (0-4). The Golden Bears are at Nichols, also on Saturday.
