WPI Shuts Out Women's Soccer

WPI Shuts Out Women's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshmen Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, N.C.) each scored second half goals while junior Maddie Willer (Penfield, N.Y.) turned aside nine shots as the WPI women's soccer team defeated Wentworth, 2-0, in a non-conference contest played on Sweeney Field.

While the first half saw no scoring, both teams had chances to get on the board first, including in the 30th minute when senior Elizabeth Somma's (Windham, Maine) shot off of a corner kick play rattled off the post. WPI held a slim, 8-7 shot margin after 45:00 of play.

The Engineers received the only goal they would need just 2:34 into the second half as junior Courtney Langley (Fairfield, Maine) sent a ball to Doherty, whose shot beat Leopard senior Jess Gardner (Wilbraham, Mass.) to the left side.

WPI added an insurance goal with 2:48 left in the contest as sophomore Abbie McInnich (Lanexa, Va.) fed Espinola inside the right side of the box. Espinola's shot bounced off the left post and into the back of the net.

Willer made six of her 10 saves in the second half to pick up her third shutout of the season. Gardner turned aside nine shots for the Black & Gold. WPI held a 22-16 shot advantage and a 5-3 corner kick advantage on the night.

With the win the Engineers improve to 4-5-0 and host MIT on Saturday. Wentworth falls to 2-6-1 and is at Roger Williams, also on Saturday.
