BOSTON, Mass. – Three different players scored goals to help the 12th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team build a 3-0 lead, en route to a 3-1 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.
With the win the Mammoths snap a two-game losing streak and improve to 3-2 on the season while the Leopards see their two-game win streak come to a halt, as their record evens at 3-3.
The opening portions of the game saw neither team with many scoring chances, however Amherst nearly went ahead 1-0 in the 25th minute as a shot by sophomore Sasha Savitsky (Malibu, Calif.) was saved by Wentworth junior Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) and deflected off the post. The rebound came out to junior Maeve McNamara (Arlington, Mass.) who put the second-chance bid wide.
Amherst scored a pair of goals within a span of 66 seconds to break the stalemate. Off a turnover in the Leopard zone, sophomore Erin McClave (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) came away with the ball and put home a shot from just outside of the box to the upper right side of the net at 29:01. Freshman Cassie Chin (Ipswich, Mass.) made it a 2-0 game at 30:07 when she beat the defense along the right side and put a shot inside the right post.
Senior Hannah Guzzi (Southborough, Mass.) made it 3-0 at the 57:19 mark when she notched her third of the year. Sophomore Hayley Roy (Arlington, Va.) took a shot from along the left side which was initially saved by Robinson, however, the rebound came out to Guzzi who put home the second-chance bid.
Wentworth got on the board with 9:27 remaining as freshman Emma daSilva (Lowell, Mass.) notched her first career marker. Junior Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) sent a long through ball down the center to daSilva, who was in the box and one-timed a shot inside the right post.
Junior Chelsea Cutler (Westport, Conn.) made four saves for the Mammoths while Robinson had 10 stops for the Leopards. Amherst had a 25-6 shot advantage and a 5-0 edge on corner kicks.
Wentworth is at WPI on Wednesday night.
