Fast Start Lifts UMass Boston Past Women's Soccer

BOSTON, Mass. – A pair of first-half goals 11:27 apart in the first half paced the offense as the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-0, in non-conference action Wednesday night.

With the win the Beacons improve to 2-8-1 while the Leopards fall to 3-7-1.

UMass Boston had an early, 3-1 shot advantage before freshman Madison Grabowski (Easthampton, Mass.) fired a shot off the post. The rebound came out to sophomore Katy Clark (Scituate, Mass.) who put a shot past Wentworth junior Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) at 13:38.

Junior Carly Robinson (Pittsfield, Mass.) helped the Beacons take a 2-0 lead when she served a corner kick to senior Kerri Alexander (Carver, Mass.) who scored at 25:05.

UMass Boston had an 11-5 shot advantage in the opening half with seven of the 11 shots going on net.

Wentworth nearly cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute, however, a shot attempt off a corner kick play went high, and, late in the contest, senior Emily Richard's bid to end the shutout hit the post.

Sophomore Jessie Tenaglia (Braintree, Mass.) made two saves in the first half while junior Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) made one second-half save. Fleming made three saves in just under 31 minutes of work while classmate Micaela Robinson (Goshen, N.Y.) made four saves in 59:04.

Wentworth hosts the University of New England on Saturday.
