Women's Soccer Shuts Out Curry to End Regular Season

BOSTON, Mass. – Three different players scored goals, including freshman Sam Kinard (Scottsdale, Ariz.) who also added an assist as the Wentworth Institute of Technology women's soccer team closed out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Curry in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Sweeney Field.

Winners of two straight the Leopards at 6-10-1 overall and finish conference play with a 4-4-1 mark. Wentworth will be on the road for a CCC Quarterfinal on Saturday against an opponent to be determined. The Colonels conclude their season with an 8-8-3 (1-6-2) record.

Strong winds were a factor throughout the game, including at the beginning where both teams struggled to gain quality scoring chances. At the 30:17 mark, junior Madyson Reno (Simi Valley, Calif.) gave the hosts a 1-0 lead when she capitalized on a loose ball and fired a shot from 30 yards out which found the upper middle of the net.

Just under seven minutes later, Kinard gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. Freshman Molly Donahue (Quincy, Mass.) possessed the ball in front where she found Kinard who put home a shot to the left side.

Curry had a chance to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 59th minute. Freshman Isabella Shields (Lakeville, Mass.) served a corner kick towards the box where sophomore Megan Ladner (Bourne, Mass.) headed the ball towards an open net. However, the ball was cleared out at the last moment by a Leopard defender, keeping the two-goal lead intact.

With 8:43 left, senior Ali Leach (Stowe, Vt.) rounded out the scoring as Kinard slid a pass from right to left where Leach tapped the ball home.

Junior Christie Fleming (Braintree, Mass.) picked up her second shutout of the season, making five saves. Sophomore Kristen Buzzotta (Lynnfield, Mass.) made one save in 45:00 of action. Sophomore Haley Rice (Lexington, Mass.) made three saves in 38:10 while sophomore Katelyn DeMaio (North Andover, Mass.) played the final 6:50 without making a save. Curry had a 13-12 shot advantage and a 4-3 edge on corner kicks.
