Hockey Battles to Tie With Anna Maria

Hockey Battles to Tie With Anna Maria

EVERETT, Mass. – Freshman Gavin Proeh (Highland Park, Ill.) scored with 1:51 remaining in regulation to tie the game Anna Maria (0-3-1) and Wentworth (1-3-3) played to a 3-all draw in non-conference ice hockey Tuesday night.

The Leopards used a first-period goal from junior Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) to take a 1-0 lead at 9:45. Chase, who also recorded an assist in the contest, took advantage of an AmCat turnover and skated in alone for his team-leading third marker of the season. Despite having a 14-5 shot advantage, the Black & Gold only mustered one goal in the opening frame.

Wentworth increased its lead to 2-0 at 8:05 of the second period as junior Connor Busch (Lake in the Hills, Ill.) tallied a power-play goal, which was assisted by senior Ethan Weiss (Troy, Mich.) and freshman Jake McKennelly (Middleton, Mass.). The Leopards had a 13-11 shot advantage in the second period, with freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) turning aside all 11 shots he faced in the stanza.

Anna Maria grabbed the next two goals – with both coming on the power play – in a span of 2:30 to even the score at 2-all. Proeh got the visitors on the board from freshman Jackson Dobek (Natick, Mass.) at 3:49 while Dobek set up freshman Quinn Tucker (Hancock, N.H.) at 6:19 to make it 2-all.

The Leopards responded with a power-play goal of their own at 12:43 to reclaim the lead. Junior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) picked up his second goal of the season from junior Adam Tracey (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) and Chase.

Proeh's second tally of the game came on the power play and was assisted by freshman Sam Cyr-Ledoux (Montreal, Que.) and junior Alex Makarov (Indian Trail, N.C.). Twenty-four seconds after the game-tying goal was scored, the AmCats went on the power play, however, less than a minute later, the visitors were whistled for a penalty, ending the man advantage. Anna Maria had a 15-14 shot advantage in the third period.

Overtime saw 4x4 hockey for the first 34 seconds before Wentworth had a man advantage for 52 seconds. However, neither team was able to score in the extra frame.

Draper made 29 stops for the Black & Gold while freshman Brendan Boncore (Oakland Township, Mich.) made 40 stops for Anna Maria. Wentworth had a 43-32 shot advantage while five of the six goals came on the power play as the AmCats were 3-for-8 and the Leopards were 2-for-7.

Wentworth resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference play this weekend with a weekend series against Western New England. The Leopards and Golden Bears face off in West Springfield on Friday night.
