EVERETT, Mass. – Four different players tallied goals as the Curry College ice hockey team fended off Wentworth Institute of Technology, 4-1, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Colonels improve to 5-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league play while the Leopards fall to 3-6-4 (3-4-1).
While Wentworth had a decided, 16-5 shot advantage in the first period, it was Curry which would get the only goal of the frame at 2:32. Freshman Vilhelm Peltonen (Helsinki, Finland) sent a pass into freshman Tarek Paranica (Grand Forks, N.D.). Paranica had a shot saved by freshman Thomas Draper (Binghamton, N.Y.) and the rebound came to freshman Matthew Henderson (Scarborough, Maine). Henderson tipped the puck past Draper, however, the net came dislodged. After deliberations by the officials, it was ruled the goal was scored prior to the net coming off its moorings.
The Colonels doubled their lead at 9:49 of the second period as freshman Alex Bouchard (Winnipeg, Alta.) sent a pass to freshman Mike Pellegrini (Markham, Ohio). Pellegrini sent a shot towards the net which was directed inside the left post by sophomore Mike Snow (Milford, Mass.). Wentworth had a 13-11 shot advantage in the second period.
Wentworth got on the board at the 9:56 mark of the third period. Junior Georgy Gorodetsky (Yekaterinburg, Russia) sent a pass from the goalie line and found junior Adam Tracey (Sleep Hollow, N.Y.). Tracey took a shot which was blocked by a Colonel defender. The rebound of the block came just inside the left faceoff circle where junior Nate Chase (Plainfield, Ill.) one-timed it past junior Justin Ketola (Esko, Minn.).
With 1:44 remaining, Draper was pulled for an extra attacker. Curry made it 3-1 on an empty-net goal off a turnover from senior Zach White (Milford, Conn.) at 18:26 and sophomore Viktor Jansson (Stockholm, Sweden) scored another empty-netter with 47 seconds left which was set up by junior Anthony Trujillo (Toronto, Ont.) and sophomore Tristan Morin (Unionville, Conn.).
Ketola made 38 saves for the Colnels while Draper made 18 stops for the Leopards. Wentworth had a 39-22 shot advantage for the game.
Wentworth closes out first semester play Friday night with a home game against Saint Anselm.
