Ballard Leads Men's Cross Country in Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's cross country team opened the 2023 campaign at the Wheaton & Babson Season Opener. The 5K race was run at the Mark Coogan Course in Attleboro, Mass.

Wentworth finished with 78 points for a third-place finish, just one point behind UMass Dartmouth for second place.

Fourteen student-athletes competed in the race with sophomore Ryan Ballard (Norwalk, Conn.) placing seventh top lead the Leopards. Ballard ran a time of 16:51.10, just over 40 seconds behind the eventual winner.

Senior Jack Chausse (Newport, R.I.) finished 12th with a time of 17:07.30, while, in his collegiate debut, freshman Jack Newton (Gloucester, Mass.) placed 14th (17:18.80).

Also making his collegiate debut and scoring for the Black & Gold was freshman Jon Savage (Hampton, N.H.) who ran a time of 17:25.80 to finish 18th. Senior Henry Walker (Brookline, Mass.) completed Wentworth's scoring runners with a time of 18:05.60 to place 27th.

Freshman Joseph Cotta (Scarborough, Maine) placed 31st (18:21.20), senior William Carpenter (Salisbury, Vt.) finished 32nd (18:24.30), sophomore Evin McIntire (Mansfield, Mass.) was 33rd (18:28.20), and freshman Hayden Pierce (Jefferson, Mass.) ran a time of 18:30.20 to place 33rd.

Freshman Mark Murphy (Medway, Mass.) placed 49th (20:34.00), junior Nick Whitcomb (Plymouth, Mass.) ran a time of 20:51.10 to finish 53rd, freshman Matt Murphy (Braintree, Mass.) placed 57th (21:38.50), while junior Robbie McCue (Weymouth, Mass.) was 61st (22:39.00).

Wentworth next competes on September 16 at the Pop Crowell Invitational on the campus of Gordon College.
