INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Leopards received an early advantage after a yellow card on the Panthers, but were not able to cash in to take the lead. Neither team got a shot on goal in the first five minutes of the game, but Plymouth State registered the first shot shortly after, with senior goaltender Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) making the save. Just seconds later, the Panthers' Maddie Hunt (Littleton, Mass.) got the first goal of the game, putting the home team ahead. An ensuing shot attempt from Wentworth missed wide, and Plymouth State took control of the game. The Panthers went on to score three goals in a span of 1:13, building their lead to 4-0 with 5:40 remaining in the first quarter. Hunt then continued the scoring for Plymouth State, scoring back-to-back goals to make it a six goal game after one.
  • The home team struck again early in the second, with Julia Donovan (Antrim, N.H.) scoring to extend the lead to seven just 1:15 into the period after Kuhns had made a pair of saves seconds prior. Kuhns went on to make seven saves for the Leopards in the quarter, surrendering just two goals. Wentworth got on the board with 9:11 remaining in the second, as junior midfielder Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) picked up her first of the season to make it a 7-1 game. After three more saves by Kuhns, Donovan added her second goal of the quarter on a free position attempt with just over four minutes remaining to put Plymouth State ahead 8-1 going into halftime.
  • Just as they had in the second, the Panthers started strong in the third quarter, putting in three goals in the first 3:07 of the period, pushing their lead up to 10. They got their 11th goal a few minutes later on a free position attempt following two saves from Kuhns. The Panthers added two more goals before the end of the third, both coming from Emily Santom (Litchfield, N.H.), who led all players with four goals on the afternoon and gave Plymouth State a 14-1 lead at the end of the quarter.
  • After another Panthers goal in the first minute, the Leopards were able to get some offensive chances of their own, putting multiple shots on net over the following few minutes. But Plymouth State was able to keep Wentworth off the board in the fourth, adding two more goals in the final period to claim a 17-1 victory in both teams' opening game of the season.
