Rogers Reaches Milestone in Women's Lacrosse's Home Opener

BOSTON, Mass – Freshman Sadie Tschider (Piedmont, Calif.) scored three goals and assisted on five others while sophomore Tatum Galuski (Ipswich, Mass.) and sophomore Gia Arancio (Smithtown, N.Y.) each scored five goals and an assist as the Smith College lacrosse team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 18-11, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Wentworth senior Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) had a seven-point game, including three goals to give her 101 for her career. She is the second student-athlete in program history with 100 or more career goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Galuski scored two of Smith's first three goals , sandwiched around Wentworth freshman Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie's (Laconia, N.H.) first collegiate marker. The Pioneers upped their lead to 4-1 before Rogers closed the gap with a goal with 2:05 left. Arancio made it 5-2 Smith after one quarter when she scored with 1:14 left.
  • Rogers opened the second quarter with a goal, assisted by classmate Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.), which gave her 100 for her career and cut the lead to 5-3. A 4-0 run with two coming off the stick of Arancio put Smith in front 9-3 but Galan and Rogers scored within 38 seconds of each other to make it 9-5 with 70 seconds left in the half. A goal with seven seconds left from junior Reese Gittleman (Ocean City, Md.) put the Pioneers ahead, 10-5, at the break.
  • Arancio scored 1:55 into the third quarter to extend the lead to 11-5. Rogers and Galan answered, scoring 21 seconds apart to make it 11-7 with 12:28 left. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half with junior Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) scoring on a free position shot with 13 seconds left to make it 13-9 through 45 minutes.
  • Senior Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.) made it 13-10 when she scored from Hamblett 37 seconds into the fourth quarter, however, Smith outscored the Black & Gold 5-1 over the remainder of the contest.
  • In addition to Rogers' seven points, Galan had three goals and two assists while Hamblett had a goal and two assists and Pashalian scored twice. Hamblett and senior Allie Lauersen (York, Maine) combined to with 13 draw controls, winning seven and six, respectively, while Lauersen also caused four turnovers.
  • Senior Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) made a pair of saves while also scooping up five ground balls. Wentworth had a 31-28 shot advantage while also winning the draw control battle, 20-13.


SERIES HISTORY

  • Tonight was the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
