INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Corsairs got on the board early, as Melanny Sanchez Alva (Stamford, Conn.), who led UMass Dartmouth with two goals on the day, scored just 1:42 into the game to put the home team ahead. The Leopards got four shots away over the next eight minutes, but were not able to break through. The Corsairs took advantage, scoring again with 4:38 remaining in the opening quarter to take a 2-0 lead. After another shot attempt for Wentworth was turned aside, the Leopards finally got on the board with 1:19 remaining, as senior midfielder Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) continued her strong play, scoring the first of her eight goals on the day, with senior defender Brianna Torres (Milford, Mass.) providing the assist on a goal that got the Leopards within one heading into the second quarter.
  • Galan evened the score just 13 seconds into the second period, as senior defender Allie Lauersen (York, Maine) won the draw control and set Galan up for the tying goal. UMass Dartmouth came back with a pair of shot attempts and tried to take the lead once again, but senior goalkeeper Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.), who made five saves on the day, stood tall for Wentworth. The Leopards then came back with five shot attempts over a three-minute span, but couldn't get one past Corsair goalkeeper Payton Conceicao (New Bedford, Mass.) until just past the six-minute mark of the quarter, when Galan scored her third straight to give Wentworth the lead, coming off an assist by Junior midfielder Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine). The Leopards then turned on the offense, scoring twice in 54 seconds to extend their lead to 5-2. Sophomore attack Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass) first got one with 5:10 remaining, then Galan added her fourth of the day moments later. Then with under a minute left before the half and playing shorthanded after a penalty, senior midfielder Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) scored to make it six straight goals for Wentworth going into the intermission.
  • Rogers picked up her second straight goal coming out of the half, as she scored off an assist by Hamblett with four minutes gone by to make it a 7-2 game. The Corsairs finally broke their scoring drought less than a minute later, as Sanchez Alva scored her second of the day. Wentworth again came right back and took command, scoring four goals in 3:14 to push the score to 11-3. Galan added two more, putting her at six goals on the day, while Hamblett and Rogers each added one. UMass Dartmouth added one with three minutes left, which was answered by a goal from freshman attack Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie (Laconia, N.H.), who scored her third of the season late in the period. Then, with just one second left, Wentworth added another goal, courtesy of senior attack Stone Carmichael (Falmouth, Maine), whose fourth goal of the year made it 13-4 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Hamblett and Galan scored a pair of early goals in the fourth, as the Leopards extended their lead to 11 just short of the five-minute mark. Galan then picked up her eighth and final goal four minute later, followed by the seventh of the year for Rogers, with Galan providing the assist. Wentworth played strong defense in the final period, not allowing a single shot on goal by the Corsairs as the Leopards cruised to a 17-4 victory to win their second straight game.
