Women's Lacrosse Forces Overtime Against Nichols

BOSTON, Mass. – Freshman McKenzie Muir's (Bedford, N.H.) goal 1:02 into overtime lifted the Nichols College women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Thursday afternoon.

Muir's heroics came after Leopard senior Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) forced the extra session with a goal coming with 13 seconds in regulation. With he win the Bison improve to 9-3 overall and 3-1 in CCC play while the Leopards fall to 2-5 (0-2). Senior Allie Lauersen (York, Maine) became the program's all-time leader in caused turnovers for Wentworth.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Nichols took a 4-1 lead with 3:14 left in the first quarter after senior Brooke Pelley (Townsend, Mass.) tallied her first of the game. Freshman Hadley Houghton (Madison, Conn.) factored in three of the Bison's four goals, scoring twice and assisting on Pelley's marker. Senior Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) provided Wentworth with its goal during the spurt, scoring a player-up goal with 5:54 left. Rogers would tie the game after the Black & Gold rolled off three straight when she put home a free position shot with 1:37 left after sophomore Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) and freshman Nora Stevens (Wells, Maine) scored 52 seconds apart.
  • Galan gave Wentworth a 5-4 lead when she scored 1:46 into the second quarter and stretch of just over 10 minutes where the two teams traded goals. After Nichols tied the game at 7-all with 3:08 left in the half on a senior Sam Asaesy (North Dartmouth, Mass.) player-up goal, Ahaesy assisted on a junior Madison Robichaud (Falmouth, Mass.) goal. Junior Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) tied the game with 34 seconds left when she put home a free position shot but Nichols took a 9-8 lead at the break after senior Elizabeth Luster (Gloucester, Mass.) put home a shot off a feed from Houghton).
  • Ahaesy put the Bison ahead by a pair when she scored 41 seconds into the third quarter but Galan answered with a pair of strikes 2:49 apart to tie the game at 10-all. Luster and Rogers traded free position markers, making it 11-all after three quarters of play.
  • Rogers fed Galan 47 seconds into the fourth quarter, giving Wentworth a 12-11 lead, however, Houghton scored twice sandwiched around a goal from Ahaesy which gave Nichols a 14-12 lead with 8:07 left. Murry scored off a pass from Stevens with 6:50 left, pulling Wentworth within a goal at 14-13.
  • With just under a minute left, a foul was called on the Leopards, giving Nichols a free position shot, The attempt missed, giving the Black & Gold the ball back with 48 seconds left and a foul and yellow card put Wentworth with a player up for the remainder of regulation. Out of a timeout, the Leopards got the ball into the attacking zone where Rogers found Galan for the equalizer with 13 ticks left. Nichols had a chance to win the game in regulation, however, senior Serena Lin (Okatie, S.C.) deflected a shot as time expired.
  • In the extra session, Murray won the draw and Stevens put a shot on net, which was saved 25 seconds into the frame. Nichols successfully cleared the ball and, after a foul, called a timeout. Out of the time out, Houghton sought to create space and fed Muir for the game winner.
  • Houghton finished with five goals and three assists while Ahaesy had four goals and two assists. Houghton also won six draw controls. Sophomore Keri Tremblay (Stow, Mass.), who made the save on Stevens' game-winning bid, made 11 saves, caused three turnovers, and scooped up nine ground balls.
  • Galan finished with six goals and won seven draw controls while Rogers added three goals and two assists. Murray scored twice and assisted on a third and Hamblett had a goal and three assists. Lauersen caused three turnovers, giving her a career-leading 76. Lin finished with seven saves.

THE SERIES:

  • Today was the ninth all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads, 5-4. It was the second time in the series the game had gone into overtime.
