Women's Lacrosse Rewrites Record Books in Victory Over Maine-Farmington

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team rewrote the team's record books Tuesday, as the Leopards picked up their first victory of the season by defeating the University of Maine-Farmington 24-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Leopards got on the board early, as senior midfielder Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) scored just 10 seconds into the game, picking up her 100th career goal on the play to give Wentworth the lead. She picked up her second of the game moments later, giving the Leopards a 2-0 lead just 1:59 into the game. Galan went on to set the team's all-time single-game record by scoring 12 goals on the night. Junior midfielder Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) set the team's all-time record with 10 assists in a single game, while providing the helper on eight of Galan's goals. Senior attack Stone Carmichael (Falmouth, Maine) scored her first goal of the season at the 2:50 mark, followed by the sixth of the season for sophomore attack Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) 12 seconds later. Murray and Galan the added one more apiece as Wentworth extended the lead to six goal with 8:58 remaining in the opening quarter. Maine-Farmington was able to break through with a goal just over a minute later to get on the board, but Murray and Carmichael came back with a pair of goals in a 50-second span to make it an 8-1 Wentworth lead. Galan then scored two more in a span of 1:07 to bring the score to 10-1 after one period of play.
  • Galan continued her strong play to start the second quarter, scoring the first two of the period to extend the Wentworth lead to 11, capping off a stretch of four straight goals for the senior. Senior defender Allie Lauersen (York, Maine) then got in on the action, scoring her first goal of the season off an assist by Hamblett. Murray picked up another just over one minute later, then scored with nine seconds remaining to give the Leopards a 15-2 lead going into the half, as the Beavers put in their second goal with 1:34 remaining in the quarter.
  • After Galan scored her ninth of the game with 3:12 gone by, freshman attack Shayleah Gunning-Lavoie (Laconia, N.H.) put in her second of the season to bring it to a 15 goal advantage for Wentworth. Galan picked up another two minutes after Gunning-Lavoie's goal, and freshman attack Nora Stevens (Wells, Maine) scored the first goal of her collegiate career while the Leopards were shorthanded, with Lauersen providing the assist to give Wentworth a 19-2 lead going into the fourth.
  • Murray and Carmichael both scored in the first three minutes of the final quarter, as the Leopards closed in on the single-game goals record. After about five minutes of scoreless play, Galan added another two, the final coming on a free position attempt to tie the single-game goals record at 11. She then scored the final goal of the game, coming with 1:07 remaining to stand alone with the all-time record of 12 goals. Stevens added an assist on the final goal, which put the Leopards over the top for the all-time record for team assists in a single game (20), and team points in a single game (44.) as Wentworth closed out a 24-2 win for their first victory of the season.

 

NOTES

  • The Leopards outshot the Beavers 40-10 on the night, while winning 24 ground balls to Maine-Farmington's 22. Senior goalkeeper Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) picked up the win in net for Wentworth, making four saves on the night.
  • The Leopards were 13-of-17 on clear attempts, while the Beavers went 10-for-20.

THE SERIES

  • This was the fifth time the two programs have met. Wentworth now leads the all-time series 3-2.
