Emerson Holds off Late Charge by Women's Lacrosse

BOSTON, Mass – Senio Ainsley Basic (Palos Verdes, Calif.) scored five goals and sophomore Lauren Longstreet (Alamo, Calif.) added four goals and two assists as the Emerson College women's lacrosse team opened its season with a 14-12 win over Wentworth Institute of Technology.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Basic gave Emerson a 1-0 lead with a goal 3:15 into the contest and freshman Callie Krosin (Pikesville, Md.) scored 5:21 later to put the Lions ahead, 2-0. Senior Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) got Wentworth on the board 17 seconds later to make it a one-goal game, however, Basic scored her second of the quarter with four ticks left, putting the hosts ahead, 3-1.
  • Sophomore Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) brought the Black & Gold back within one when she scored 1:07 into the second quarter. Emerson scored the next three with Longstreet tallying two and Basic one. Galan ended the run with a goal with 5:22 left, however, Emerson scored three of the next four and led, 9-4, at the break. Wentworth's goal during that span came on a man-up marker from Galan.
  • After Basic opened the second half with a goal at 14:28, Galan scored twice in a span of 4:52, making it 10-6. The Lions scored four of the next six goals in the quarter with Murray scoring a pair for the Leopards.
  • Murray ended the third quarter with a goal and started the fourth with two, scoring at 11:19 and 10:07 to bring Wentworth to within 14-10. Galan scored the Leopards' next two, coming 3:07 apart, to make it a two-goal game with 5:34 left.
  • Wentworth pressured and put three shots on net, including a free-position shot from Galan with 1:45 left. However, Emerson junior Nina Khosla (La Jolla, Calif.) made six stops in the final quarter to hold on for the win.
  • In addition to Basic and Longstreet, Krosin and sophomore Jules Rein (Geneva, Ill.) each had two goals and an assist.
  • Junior Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) assisted on three Wentworth goals while senior Allie Lauersen (York, Maine) had three of the Leopards' 10 caused turnovers.
  • Khosla made 14 saves for Emerson while senior Lily Kuhns (Gloucester, Mass.) made seven stops for Wentworth. The Leopards had a 32-26 shot advantage.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Tonight marked the second all-time meeting and the first since the 2016 season. Emerson leads, 2-0.
