INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Leopards fell behind in the early stages of the first, as Gordon put in three goals in the first three minutes of the game to take the lead. Abigail Mansfield (Starksboro, Vt.), who scored four times on the day for the Fighting Scots, got things started with a goal at the 1:09 mark. Wentworth came back to score two of the next three, as senior midfielders Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.) and Emily Rogers got on the board for Wentworth, who cut the lead to two after Mansfield had scored one more. Hailey Beling (Cheshire, Conn.) then scored the second of her five goals on the day to give Gordon a three-goal advantage once again, but junior midfielder Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Main) answered with a goal for the Leopards to cut their deficit to 5-3 just past the midway point of the first. Mansfield then scored her third with 6:15 left in the quarter, and despite three shots by the Leopards the rest of the period, they were unable to break through as the Scots took a 6-3 lead into the second.
  • Wentworth came back with three straight goals in a span of 3:02 to tie the game. Sophomore attack Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) first got one by, then senior midfielder Emily Rogers (Pembroke, Mass.) scored two consecutive goals to even the score at 6-6. Just 40 seconds after the Leopards had tied it, Gordon took the lead back on another goal by Mansfield, but Wentworth then scored twice in a 10-second span to take an 8-7 as Rogers and Murray scored. Rogers scored one more a minute later to make it a two-goal game, but Gordon cut it to one with 1:07 left in the period thanks to a Beling goal. However, Galan answered with a goal for Wentworth with 46 seconds left, giving the home team a 10-8 lead going into the half.
  • Gordon opened the third with a goal early to make it a 10-9 score, which was countered with Galan's third goal at the 4:35 mark to push the lead back to two. Two minutes later, Rogers extended the lead to three with another goal for Wentworth, and although the Leopards got multiple shots off, it was the Scots who picked up the next goal with 2:33 left in the third, as Beling cut Wentworth's lead to two. But once again the Leopards responded, as Murray scored just 40 seconds later to make it a 13-10 score heading into the final period.
  • Murray started off the fourth with another goal, pushing Wentworth's lead up to four. The teams then traded goals, as Abbie Zorrilla (Ephrata, Pa.) scored for Gordon, while Murray continued her hot streak with another goal for the Leopards. Then with 3:21 left, senior midfielder Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.) put the game away with a goal to make it a 16-11 score. Beling scored another one late, and Murray tied her career-high with her sixth goal in the final seconds as the Leopards took a 17-12 victory in conference play.
