HARTFORD, Conn. – The visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards upended the Trinity College Bantams, 4-3, in men's ice hockey action on Trinity College's Williams Rink at the Koeppel Community Sports Center this afternoon. Trinity falls to 1-3, while the Leopards improve to 4-3-1.
Trinity opened the scoring on a short-handed tally by junior forward Jeff Menard (Burlington, Mass.) from twin brother Chris Menard (Burlington, Mass.) 9:10 into the game. Wentworth responded with a goal at 12:14 of the first by sophomore forward Fred Gervais (Mississauga, Ontario), and took a 2-1 lead on a power-play score by freshman forward Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) 1:25 into the second stanza.
Chris Menard scored from rookie Paul Burns (New Hope, Pa.) at the 5:50 mark of the second period to tie the game at 2-2, but the Leopards again answered with back-to-back goals. Rookie forward Seric Kapp (Scheafferstown, Pa.) scored unassisted 11:38 into the second frame, and senior forward Casey Shade (Anchorage, Alaska) lit the lamp just 1:01 later to put the visitors ahead, 4-2. Bantam freshman forward Jackson Brewer (Newton, Mass.) redirected a wrister from Chris Menard into the upper right corner of the net to pull Trinity within one at 4-3 with 2:26 left in regulation, and the Bantams found themselves with the puck and a two-man advantage after pulling freshman goalie Sam Calahan (Edina, Minn.) and a late Wentworth penalty, but could not get off a shot over the game's final 32 seconds.
Calahan finished with 33 saves, while junior Mike Jarboe (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) made 36 saves for the Leopards. Wentworth committed just two penalties, while Trinity had five, and Wentworth had 37 shots to 39 for the Bantams. Leopard junior defenseman Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) recorded two assists.
