Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep at Plymouth State

Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep at Plymouth State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshmen Michael Heffner (Lloydminster, Sask.) and Kevin Crowe (Galloway, N.J.) broke a scoreless tie with back-to-back third-period goals just 24 seconds apart and Wentworth Institute of Technology went on to a 3-1 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference men's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink.

Freshman Mike Domsodi (Kirkland, Que.) gave the Leopards their third goal with five minutes remaining, and PSU got on the board with a power play goal by junior Seth Phelan (Bristol, Conn.) with two minutes to play. Wentworth held on to complete the weekend sweep of the Panthers, as the Leopards improve to 9-4-1 overall and PSU drops to 8-4.

Defense and goaltending dominated the first two periods, as the scoring columns remained blank.  Wentworth freshman Alex Peck (Kirkland, Que.) and PSU sophomore Tyler Ingerson (Concord, N.H.) made 15 and 14 saves, respectively, to keep the game scoreless.

Wentworth finally broke the deadlock at the 8:31 mark of the third period when Heffner rifled a loose puck from the slot over the shoulder of Ingerson into the top left corner of the net.  Moments later, Crowe collected the puck along the left boards and skated to the middle before firing another shot into the top left corner at 8:55.  The Leopards made it 3-0 at 14:54 when junior Shaun Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) took a slap shot from the left point that deflected off Domsodi in front and into the net.

PSU, which had to overcome four straight third-period penalties, finally got on the board with just under two minutes remaining when freshman Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) fed Phelan from the right corner and Phelan snapped a shot past Peck to break up his shutout bid.

The Panthers finished with a 24-22 advantage in shots on goal.  Peck wound up with 23 saves to earn the win and Ingerson made 19 stops in what was his first start of the season.

Plymouth State returns to Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action Thursday with a visit to Westfield State University.  Wentworth continues its stretch of five straight road games Friday with an ECAC Northeast Conference game at Becker College.
