BOSTON, Mass. – Two graduating student-athletes who combined excellence on the court and ice with excellence in the classroom have been honored as the 2012 recipients of the Wentworth Athletic Department Senior Scholar-Athlete Awards. Ice hockey forward Skylur Jameson (Long Beach, Calif.) has been named the recipient of the 2012 Carl A. Swanson Senior Scholar-Athlete Award while volleyball middle hitter Julie Bruton (Montgomery, Texas) earned the 2012 Eugenia Louise Sweeney Senior Scholar-Athlete Award.
The awards were voted on by the Wentworth Athletic Policy Board earlier this summer and were presented this afternoon as a part of the Leopards' Senior Ring Ceremony, which was held at Maggiano's Little Italy Restaurant in Boston. The ceremony, held the day before commencement, honors four-year student-athletes and contributors to the program with a ring, symbolizing their commitment to the Athletic programs at Wentworth during their careers.
Jameson, a two-year captain for the Leopard skaters, helped the Black & Gold win their first ECAC Northeast title since 2004 this past season as he scored 10 goals and assisted on 23 others for 33 points. Half of his goals came on the power play and he had two game-winning tallies. This year's edition of the Leopards also became the first team in school history to win an NCAA Tournament game when they defeated Plymouth State, 3-1, in the opening round, before falling to Norwich, 3-0, in the quarterfinal round. Wentworth finished the season 21-7-1, which included a school-record 11-game win streak from January 26-March 10.
During his career, he was named the 2009 ECAC Northeast Rookie of the Year and the 2010 ECAC Northeast Player of the Year, in addition to being named First Team All-ECAC Northeast in each of his four seasons. He leaves the program having played in 107 of a possible 109 games, scoring 67 goals and 92 assists for 159 points. Both his 159 points and 92 assists rank him second on the program's all-time list, while his 67 goals rank him fifth. He also posted the second highest single-season totals for assists (29) and points (48) during his rookie campaign. Jameson was twice (2011, 2012) named a semifinalist for the Joe Concannon Award, an award that honors the top American-born ice hockey player in New England at Division II/III level.
Graduating with a 3.739 GPA in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Jameson was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District I Division III At-Large first team.
A three-time (2008, 2009, 2011) All-Commonwealth Coast Conference honoree, Bruton played in 101 of a possible 101 sets over 29 matches this past season. She recorded 209 kills, an attack percentage of .233, 54 service aces, 284 digs, and 54 total blocks. Her attack percentage, aces, digs, and total blocks all led the team, and also recorded the second-most amount of kills for the Black & Gold. In a 3-2 win at Newbury, she tallied a career-high 17 kills and had a career-high 20 digs in a 3-1 loss at St. Joseph's (Maine). Wentworth finished the season with a 14-15 record – tying the program's single-season win total – and earned its first berth in the CCC Tournament since the 2006 season.
Bruton, a three-time captain for the Leopards, ended her career as the program's all-time leader in matches played and sets played, playing in 381 of a possible 382 sets over all 112 of the team's matches in her career and also leaves the program as its all-time leader in block solos (95). She ranks second on Wentworth's all-time list with 881 kills, 2,439 attack attempts, 965 digs, 1,196 points, and a .199 attack percent. While her 177 total blocks rank her third on the program's all-time list while her 179 service aces are fourth in program history. Bruton also had two of the program's top five seasonal dig totals and two of the program's top 10 seasonal kill totals.
Graduating with a 3.311 GPA in Industrial Design, Bruton had a design project from her portfolio featured in the summer edition of the WIT Magazine.
