Milnes' Career Night Lifts Hockey to Season-Opening Win

EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Sam Milnes (Middletown, R.I.) had a career night with three goals and an assist as the Wentworth Institute of Technology hockey team opened the season with a 5-1 win over Castleton Friday night at Allied Veterans Rink.

In his Leopard debut, sophomore Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) had a goal and an assist while senior Kasey O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.), sophomore George Weiner (Wayne, N.J.) and freshman Nichols Roussel (Maple Ridge, B.C.) each recorded a pair of assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Milnes gave the Leopards a 2-0 lead in the first period, scoring on a redirected shot by Weiner at the 6:24 mark and then again nearly 10 minutes later when he took a feed from Shankar, who was set up by Roussel.
  • Milnes returned the favor at the 3:16 mark of the second period when O'Brien sent him a pass and he fed Shankar to make it 3-0.
  • Castleton got on the board at the 10:50 mark when junior Hunter Sarro (North Attleboro, Mass.) found the back of the net.
  • Wentworth's next two goals came on special teams. Junior Charlie Reid (Marshfield, Mass.) potted a shorthanded marker at 16:51 of the second to make it 4-1 before Milnes completed the hat trick with a power-play goal at 14:16.
  • A physical third period featured a total of 14 penalties between the two squads, resulting in eight power-play attempts.
  • Freshman Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) picked up the win in his collegiate debut, , making 27 saves which included 12 in the third period. Wentworth finished the game with a 32-28 shot advantage and was 9-for-9 on the penalty kill.

SERIES NOTES:

  • The eighth all-time meeting between the two teams, Wentworth has won two of the last three to take a 4-3-1 series advantage.
