EVERETT, Mass. – Freshman Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) was sharp in goal for the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team, making 33 saves on 38 shots, but couldn't lead his team to victory as the Black and Gold dropped a 5-2 decision to the Seahawks of Salve Regina on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The game started with intensity and Salve Regina managed to get an odd man break on the opening draw. Senior Mitch Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.) drew a shot on goal that caught freshman Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) giving up a long rebound to junior Seth Benson (Moorhead, Minn.), who managed to break the ice just 29 seconds into the night.
  • Towards the end of the first period, the Leopards found themselves on an odd man rush of their own. Freshman Nicholas Roussel (Maple Ridge, B.C.) ripped a shot on goal with a rebound popping out to sophomore Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.). Shankar made a move to get enough space to find the back of the net 16:57 into the first frame.
  • Just under two minutes later, the Seahawks regained a lead on a goal from junior Johnny Mulera (Rockville, Md.), putting the visitors ahead 2-1.
  • Powerplay chances were lively during the course of the second period. However, it wasn't until the 15:48 mark of the period that freshman Dylan Price (Calgary, Atl.) put a shot past McGovern to extend the advantage to 3-1.
  • 19 seconds later, freshman Travis Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshman Nikolas Sombrowski (Fernie, B.C.) worked a nice give-and-go play in the defensive zone that gave them an odd man rush opportunity. Sombrowski finished and cut the deficit to 3-2.
  • Senior Joseph Kile (Troy, Mich.) answered the Leopards' fight in the third period, scoring on a second-chance opportunity 8:28 into the period to give the Seahawks a 4-2 lead.
  • Freshman Walter Baumann (Gates Mills, Ohio) ripped his own shot that beat McGovern 16:36 into the final period, giving the Seahawks a 5-2 lead that would hold as the final score.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Tonight marked the 43rd all-time meeting between the two teams. Wentworth leads the all-time series, 28-11-4.
