Bison Rally Past Hockey

EVERETT, Mass. – Senior Hunter Fraser (Grafton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as part of a run of five unanswered markers as the Nichols College ice hockey team rallied past Wentworth Institute of Technology, 6-3, in Commonwealth Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon.

POWER PLAYS:  NC:  1-2; WIT:  1-7
GOALIE SAVES:  NC:  Jack McGovern, 22; WIT:  Mathias Backstrom, 32

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wentworth wasted little time getting on the board as senior Kasey O'Brien (Stoneham, Mass.) capitalized on a Nichols turnover, feeding sophomore Sean Brown (Seabrook, N.H.) for a shorthanded goal at 4:18. The Leopards upped their lead to 2-0 with 2:41 left when Brown won a faceoff in the Wentworth zone with the puck finding classmate Mitch McGinn (Salem, N.H.). McGinn fed freshman Ian Worthley (Saugus, Mass.) for his second of the season. With 10 seconds left in the opening period, Nichols sophomore Josh Dickson (Port Perry, Ont.) cut the lead to 2-1.
  • At 9:09 of the second period and with the Leopards on a major power play, sophomore Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) played the puck from behind the net where juniors Charlie Reid (Marshfield, Mass.) and Josh Faussett (Okemos, Mich.) played catch. Faussett eventually controlled the puck and tallied his first of the season.
  • Scoring three times in a span of 3:02, the Bison took a 4-3 lead. Fraser scored the first of his two goals at the 12:39 mark of the second period on a 4x4 goal, and, 64 seconds later, sophomore Nathan Carl (Sherwood Park, Alta.) tied the score at 3-all with a power-play goal. At the 15:41 mark, senior Conor Leonard (Charlton, Mass.) scored what would be the game winner.
  • At the 9:10 mark of the third period, Fraser scored his second of the game and, with 39 seconds left and an extra Leopard attacker on the ice, sophomore Kaiden Scott (Detroit, Mich.) potted an empty-net tally.
  • Freshman Jack McGovern (Ancaster, Ont.) made 22 saves. Wentworth had 35-27 shot advantage.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Today was the 51st all-time meeting between the two teams. Nichols leads, 28-20-3.
