Nor'Easters Shut Out Hockey in CCC Showdown

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Seven different players tallied goals for the Nor'Easters of the University of New England as the Wentworth Institute of Technology ice hockey team fell to their Commonwealth Coast Conference rival by a 8-0 score Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Nor'Easters broke the ice just over three-quarters of the way into the first period when freshman Juraj Elias (Slovakia) tipped a shot from the point off the stick of senior Collin Heinold (Charleston, S.C.) that beat junior goalkeeper Will Oliver (Chesterfield, Mo.), opening the game in a 1-0 lead for the hosts.
  • UNE struck 28 seconds later when sophomore Will Spitzer (Lincolnshire, Ill.) crept into the high slot, received a nice pass from freshman Aidan Curran (Dracut, Mass.), and ripped a shot to the twine. The score gave UNE a 2-0 lead.
  • The Nor'Easters continued their scoring surge into the middle period when freshman Jayden Price (Dove Canyon, Calif.) scored on a rebound shot. The initial shot was taken by sophomore Ryan Kuzmich (Norton, Mass.) and Price's tally gave UNE a 3-0 lead just over a minute and 30 seconds in.
  • Price notched another goal just over six minutes into the second period on a great effort around the crease. His third wraparound attempt found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-0.
  • 14:01 into the second period, senior Jared Christy (Costa Mesa, Calif.) scored on a one-timer to give the Nor'Easters a 5-0 lead.
  • Freshman Mike Tersoni (Framingham, Mass.) ripped a shot past freshman Jack McGovern (Antcaster, Ont.) to extend UNE's lead to 6-0 with just over two minutes left in the second period.
  • Kuzmich notched a tally of his own in the game 7:20 into the third period on a shot in between the hash marks, giving UNE a 7-0 lead.
  • The Nor'Easters found the back of the net when senior Jake Fuss (Fairfield Conn.) scored on a loose puck in front of McGovern, giving the hosts a 8-0 lead.

SERIES NOTES:

  • Winners of the last four meetings, UNE leads the all-time series, 13-2-1.

NEXT UP:

  • The Black & Gold are off until after the new year begins when they visit Plattsburgh on Friday, January 6 (7:00 p.m.).
