Men's Tennis Battles Gordon to the End

WENHAM, Mass. – A three-set decision at No. 2 singles, which was the final completed match of the day, was the difference as the Gordon College men's tennis team (2-1) edged Wentworth Institute of Technology (1-1), 5-4, Wednesday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as senior Matt McEathron (Upton, Mass.) teamed with sophomore Alex Ryzi (Littleton, Mass.) to take an 8-2 win over Wentworth senior Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) and junior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) at No. 3. The Leopards tied the match at a point apiece at No. 2 when seniors Tyler Hall (Framingham, Mass.) and Jarrett North (Roanoke, Texas) were an 8-2 winner over senior Richard Ryzi (Littleton, Mass.) and sophomore Mark Noschese (Wayne, N.J.). Gordon escaped doubles with an 8-7 (7-1) win at No. 1 with senior Will Jeffreys (Parkton, Md.) and sophomore John Martineau (Auburn, N.H.) defeating freshman Daniel Gallegos (Monterrey, Mexico) and junior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.).

Four of the six singles matches went three sets, with the two that didn't the teams split. At No. 3, Salomon defeated Richard Ryzi, 6-1, 6-1, while at No. 1 Jeffreys defeated Gallegos, 6-3, 6-0, which gave Gordon a 3-2 lead. Senior Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.) was 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 winner over Noschese at No. 4 to even the match at 3-all before the Fighting Scots took a 4-3 lead when Alex Ryzi defeated Maki, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. North tied the match at 4-all when he defeated McEathron, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, at No. 5, setting the stage for the No. 2 singles match to decide the outcomes.

Martineau took the first set over Hall, 7-5, however, Hall forced the third set with a 6-2 win in the second set. The decided set saw Martineau take a 6-4 win, giving his team the victory.

The two teams square off against each other on Saturday in Wenham, Mass.
