Men's Tennis Set to Take on Roger Williams in CCC Title Match

BOSTON, Mass. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team is set to make its first-ever appearance in the Commonwealth Coast Conference championship match as the Leopards travel to Roger Williams on Saturday for a 12:00 pm first serve.

HOW TO WATCH:
Following institutional and CCC COVID-19 protocols, spectators will not be allowed on the Roger Williams campus to watch the match in person. The match will be webcast through the Roger Williams website at https://rwuhawks.com/sports/2021/3/26/mens-tennis-live-video.aspx.

HOW THEY GOT HERE:
Winners of three matches in a row, Wentworth (7-3, 4-1 CCC) was the number one seed in the CCC's "Pod B." The Leopards clinched a playoff berth with a 6-3 win over Gordon on April 24 and wrapped up the number one seed by edging Endicott, 5-4, in the regular-season finale. Thursday's semifinal match saw the Black & Gold fall behind to the Fighting Scots, 2-1, after doubles play, however, rolled off four singles victories to take a 5-2 win.

Roger Williams went through the regular season unblemished (9-0, 5-0 CCC), dropping just one point in designated conference-only play to earn the "Pod A" top seed. Leading 2-1 after doubles play in their semifinal match against Nichols on Thursday, the Hawks upped their lead to 4-1 before holding off Nichols, 5-3.

CLOSE CALLS:
Out of the 10 matches Wentworth has played this season, six have been decided by a 5-4 score. The Leopards are 3-3 in those contests.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
While this is Wentworth's first-ever championship match appearance under the bracketed format, the Leopards own a pair of CCC titles, having won in 1989 and 1990 when the format was based on total points at a one-day invitational.

Roger Williams is making its 11th championship match appearance and is seeking its first title since the 2011 season. The last time the Hawks made the CCC finals was in 2016, the last of their nine straight finals appearances. Roger Williams also won the league in 2009 and boasts a 2-2 record in four NCAA Tournament matches.

ALL-TIME SERIES:
The two teams have not met since the 2019 season, where Roger Williams was a 9-0 winner. This will be the 32and all-time meeting between the two programs.

WHAT'S NEXT:
In addition to capturing the 2021 CCC Men's Tennis Championship, the winner of Saturday's match earns the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships. Selections will be announced on Monday (May 10) at Noon with play commencing on Friday, May 14.
