Historic Run for Men's Tennis Ends in CCC Finals

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's tennis team's historic season came to a close Saturday afternoon as the Leopards were defeated by Roger Williams, 5-1, in the 2021 Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship match.

With the win the Hawks (10-0) pick up their first league title since 2011 and will be the CCC's representative in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships, the field for which will be announced on Monday. Making their first-ever appearance in the CCC finals, the Leopards conclude the season with a 7-4 record, posting the most wins the program has seen in a season since the 2006 squad finished 9-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Roger Williams took a 2-1 lead after doubles play. At No. 3, junior Tyler Cain (Montpelier, Vt.) and sophomore Nick Crisante (North Haven, Conn.) were 8-1 winners over seniors Harrison Maki (Rutland, Mass.) and Jarrett North (Roanoke, Texas), while at No. 1, sophomore Jon Trevethan (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Dan Tocco (East Quogue, N.Y.) picked up an 8-4 win over junior Kevin Salomon (West Newton, Mass.) and freshman Daniel Gallegos (Monterey, Mexico).
  • Wentworth's lone point of the match came when seniors Tyler Hall (Framingham, Mass.) and Tristan Maus (Mansfield, Mass.) had a back-and-forth battle with sophomore Ryan Schuck (Glastonbury, Conn.) and junior Arlex Correa (Lynnfield, Mass.), with the Leopard duo prevailing, 8-6.
  • Trevethan gave the Hawks a 3-1 lead with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gallegos at No. 1 before Correa made it 4-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maus at No. 4. Tocco clinched the championship when he defeated Hall, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2.
  • In unfinished matches, Salomon was leading Cain, 6-4, 5-0, at No. 3, Schuck had a 6-2, 3-1 lead over North at No. 5, and sophomore Jake Bernard (Redding, Conn.) was ahead of senior Sam Ferro (Whitman, Mass.) at No. 6, 6-2, 3-2.
