Carroll Nets Career High in Women's Basketball's Loss at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – Freshman Ashley Rourke (Londonderry, N.H.) tallied a game-high 22 points to lead three players in double figures as the Salve Regina women's basketball team defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 61-43, in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Monday night.

Freshman Brianna Carroll (Douglas, Mass.) led the Leopards with a career-high 20 points off the bench. With the win, the Seahawks improve to 8-8 overall and 7-3 in CCC play while the Leopards sit at 3-13 (1-9).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Freshman Maddy Foster (Lewiston, Maine) gave Wentworth a 2-0 lead when she scored 1:32 into the contest. Salve Regina tied the score less than a minute later on a sophomore Briana Neary (Wayne, N.J.) layup. The Leopards scored the next four points, coming on layups by Foster and Carroll, which gave the Black & Gold a 6-2 lead with 4:43 left in the quarter.
  • After a layup by Neary, Carroll hit one of two free throws to put Wentworth ahead, 7-4, with 1:09 left in the quarter but two free throws by junior Megan Henaghan (Whitman, Mass.) cut the lead to one with 11 seconds left.
  • Henaghan's free throws started an 18-0 run for the Seahawks, who took a 22-7 lead on a three pointer from sophomore Amanda Folan (North Attleboro, Mass.) with 4:35 remaining in the half. Carroll ended the run when she knocked down a three on the next possession. Folan followed with a three before Carroll scored seven straight points to make it 25-17 at the break.
  • The Seahawks opened the second half on a 10-2 run, taking a 35-19 lead after a Folan three pointer with 7:27 left in the third quarter. Senior Kayla Kelley (Boston, Mass.) ended the run with a layup at the seven-minute mark and Wentworth found itself trailing by a dozen (39-27) after Carroll hit a three with 2:51 left. Five straight Seahawk points extended the lead to 17 (44-27) before Foster ended the quarter with a layup.
  • Neither team scored within the first two minutes of the fourth quarter with Leopard sophomore Mary Kate Gould (Medway, Mass.) hitting one of two free throws to break the ice. After a junior Morgan Shuey (Corning, Iowa) layup, Foster answered with a three, cutting the lead to 13 with 6:50 left. However, the hosts increased their lead to as many as 20 with just over two minutes left.
  • Shuey added 12 points for Salve Regina while Folan chipped in with 11 Neary had 13 rebounds for the Seahawks, who had a 51-28 rebounding advantage.
  • Foster was the other Leopard to score in double figures as she added 11. Amoddio had five steals for the Black & Gold.

  • With the win, Salve Regina now holds a 56-7 advantage in the series.
